Publisher's Summary

D'Anne Burwell's smart, athletic son - raised in a loving and prosperous home - begins abusing OxyContin as a teenager, and within a year drops out of college, walks out of rehab, and lands homeless on the streets of Boulder. Struggling with fear, guilt, and a desperate need to protect her son, D'Anne grapples with her husband's anger and her daughter's depression as the family disease of addiction impacts them all. She discovers the terrifying links between prescription-drug abuse and skyrocketing heroin use. And she comes to understand that to save her child she must step back and allow him to fight for his own soul.

Saving Jake gives voice to the devastation shared by the families of addicts, and provides vital hope. Above all, it is a powerful personal story of love and redemption.

An honest look at a mother’s journey into her son’s addiction battle

This book touched on the very real parts of the struggle of a son or daughter battling addiction. It reminded me that the journey does not end and it is ok to not be ok.

Courageous mother

I am so impressed by this mother. I certainly hope this son knows how fortunate he is to have a mother with such compassion and whole-hearted genius LOVE. This type of mother is often not the case for so many recovering addicts. A mom like this making the addict feel so cared for by doing her own recovery in Alanon is not every recovery addicts experience as they struggle to reach and maintain the credibly challenging journey of recovery. For those of you with moms like this one in this book, she needs to be at the top of your gratitude list every night before you go to bed. God bless the mothers that go all in and learn everything they possibly can to best help their child and help themselves. This woman represents true motherly love!

Enjoyed listening to this

Felt the readers voice fit the story perfectly! Found helpful to hear perspective from the parent. I am a recovering addict 12.5 years clean/sober. I can't even fathom the hell I put my parents thru.

Not that great.

I dont know if it was just me but I didn't feel much of a connection to any of the characters in this book..And found the son to be somewhat rude, selfish, arrogant, and not just because of the drugs. I felt the same way about the mom too... But like I said its probably just me..

Excellently describes when addiction hits home!

In sharing her family's struggles with her son's substance use disorder/addiction, D'Anne Burwell offers family members a way to influence in a positive way their loved one's road towards recovery. I really like how Burwell intersperses her directness from her journal and other things she learned from reading/research/Al-Anon with/to her son. The discussions in her head and heart versus what she says or does out loud are very helpful....very poignant.......keep your tissues handy but also a pen to take notes--she offers excellent usable insights in how to transverse this difficult journey ...

Beautiful

A real and honest description about addiction and how this disease affect the addicts and their families. I hope this audiobook spreads awareness and help the families around the world that are suffering from the fight against opiate addiction or the loss of a loved one. This is an epidemic and the combination of heroin and fentanyl is killing a lot of young people in the United States. Recovery is possible but no without help and support. I am very grateful for discovering this audiobook. It is full of beautiful words and the amzing story of the true love of a mother towards her son. Her patience and kindness helped to give his son a second chance in life. Thank you very much for this gift for the soul.
