Publisher's Summary

When Sheriff Sky Hayden gets word of human remains behind the Indigo Diamond Ranch, he not only has to deal with the possibility of a murderer in their small town, but is haunted by a handsome cowboy - one he can't seem to get out of his mind.

Cole Diamond, his father, and his two brothers work a horse ranch in a dying town in Montana. The downturn in the economy, the businesses leaving, has decimated the remaining town's folk, and the last thing they need for their livelihood is the publicity of a murder.

With everyone under suspicion, Sky has to bear the brunt of the investigation as the state patrol begins to dig deep into the lives of the people who have lived quietly off the radar. And Sky and Cole are forced to face each other, something they had managed to avoid doing for years.

As the pressure builds and accusations are made, Sky and Cole end up together once more, forming a united front against outsiders trying to destroy their small hometown. But soon the men realize the suspicion falls on them, but not for homicide...for something that is perceived as a worse crime.

"Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" was just a silly expression to sell on souvenir T-shirts...until the sheriff figures out "riding a cowboy" may be just what he needs to keep sane. Someone is going to get strung up in that town for crimes they didn't commit. The two men hope like hell it's not going to be them.

small town blues

I liked the book well enough. It was a whodunit which is my favorite. There were some weak point that might be spoilers. And towards the end it was huh how?

Good story. Good narration.

Life in a small town means that being be a little different makes a person stand out in often uncomfortable ways and trying to keep secrets is almost impossible. This murder mystery/gay romance highlights both those facts in several ways.

The twists the author built into a seemingly obvious plot add some bite to the story. So do the characters. Sky and Cole have an interesting dynamic that moves the story in an unexpected direction. The resolution was comfortable, but I hope these characters show up in more of Hauser's books.

Russo's narration is entertaining and the quirks in his accent add some flavor to the characters.

Save a Horse! Such a cute title!

This is an audio review.
I love this cover! I have from the day I saw it all those years ago and yes this is also a retro review as this is not a new book but one I highly suggest anyone that likes a sexy suspense, cowboys and small-town sheriffs grab.
Sky is a small town sheriff. Cole is the son of the owner of the Diamond Ranch a failing ranch in their small town that has tours and horse riding classes and is struggling. Sky gets a call that bones have been found o the edge of the Diamond ranch and soon it is discovered it is the remains of a human girl missing form Billings.
Sky seeing Cole again brings back lots of feelings since both men have had feelings since high school and neither have really been dating much.
The murder brings the state police into town and the digging brings up more than just who killed the girl.
I loved both Sky and Cole and even all the other characters were fabulous too. The suspense is great and the stolen times between Sky and Cole super hot.
Now bring in the narration of Nick J Russo and an already great story just gets better. Russo adds that nuance to the narration only he can. and be careful listening to this in public... Nick's sexy times can make you sweat. He doesn't just read it, baby, his moans and groans are x rated!

Very Good Narration Saves Story (Somewhat)

Would you listen to Save a Horse... again? Why?

Yes, because I enjoyed the two main characters - Skye (sp?) and Cole. Cole was a sweetheart and the narrator defined each of their voices (although it was close sometimes). And I actually found myself really enjoying some scenes - like when Cole had to sit thru a lie detector test - his reactions were priceless.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Yes, the ending was a nice surprise.

Have you listened to any of Nick J. Russo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and while he's not a favorite author when he does cowboys he's very good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh and made me happy. I liked that the two MCs got a chance with each other and their blissful happiness was contagious. Their fear was also very realistically portrayed and made me sad. But there were more times I laughed than not.

Any additional comments?

This is a story worth reading/listening to. I would listen to it again. It had a good story and the characters were quite fun/interesting. I didn't like Russo's voices for the brothers and father - they were uneven and a little hard to understand (in his effort to make them different).

Great narrator

The writing isn't as good as I expected. The story needed development, but the narrator did a great job with the book.

Stampede of events

Fraught full on family drama of events which cascade into total chaos for all. Well written tense tale, with humour and tragedy, with excellent narration, which gave each sweet MC an individual voice and character. Enjoyable story with MCs you can really appreciate and like. SURPRISING AND ENJOYABLE

Save a Horse...

I read this about 6 years ago and thought I’d give the audiobook a whirl.
It’s a cheesy book with little ladies and yeehaws but the message is a good one.
I also laughed at the square dance caller - that last dance was cute.
Go in looking for lighthearted romance between a sheriff and his cowboy in a small Montana town and stay for the virginal but sexy Skye and Cole. There’s also a police procedural going on with the most painful state police of all time, ones who are overly nosy about Cole’s sex life, as they‘re called in to attempt to solve the murder of a young woman whose bones are found on the Diamond ranch.
Nick J Russo does a good job with some sometimes stilted dialogue. He infuses a mix of humour and frustration.
I’ve always enjoyed Save a Horse and Russo made Skye’s voice plenty sexy, Cole’s like years of pent-up desire and desperation.
Overall, this is an easy way to while away a few hours.

Good story

Good story, nice portrayal of gay life in a small town. Though the characters tended to be stereo types and Cole could easily have been female, the story kept rolling along at a good pace. It wonder if another story follows these characters, Cole and Sky in their new lives? Nick Russo's narration gave the story an extra dimension, I will look forward to hearing more from him.
