Publisher's summary

Legions of murderous undead, Haitian voodoo, and a 5,000-year-old serpent god.

Yeah, 'cause that's exactly what Yancy Lazarus needs in his life: more complications. As if being the Hand of Fate and the newly appointed guardian over one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse wasn't headache enough.

All Yancy wants is an easy life on the open road - chock-full of ribs, beer, cigarettes, and smoky bars blaring with gritty blues music - but that just isn't in the cards. Nope, not anymore. He's been charged with saving the world, and now that he's got a no-shit demon riding shotgun in his head, he's sorta committed to the cause.

If Yancy can't sort through this colossal heap of bullshit, he's coffin bound. But, he's not dead yet. In fact, he even has a lead.

Turns out one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse - the pale Rider, Death - is slumming around in one of Yancy's old haunts. In order to corner this new threat, though, Yancy's gonna have to face some deadly supernatural nightmares from his distant past. And, to make matters worse, he's not the only one trailing the Pale Rider. A powerful new mage with some serious magical chops is also aiming to find the Fourth Seal and he'll do whatever it takes to win. Even if it means hurting those closest to Yancy...like FBI Agent Nicole Ferraro.

Can things get any darker? Only if you're Yancy!

One thing I will say about Hunter, the man knows how to build a series. The books get progressively more dangerous, darker, and have higher stakes. Yancy grows along with the trial and tribulations he is forced to endure, and the ride is fascinating. I came into this series backwards. I started with book 5 (Don't Ask) and then found my way to the beginning. So, I sort of knew what was going to happen, and man the gloom was overwhelming.

I used to compare Yancy to other Urban Fantasy characters like Dresden and Temple, but I feel that he has really stepped away from them and stands alone. He is fascinating to follow, and heartbreaking to be around. He has it rough, but man does he do hard times in style. I'd pick him to fight for me in my hour of need over any of those other urban mages.

This is a devastating tale. Yancy starts out in it up to his neck, and before it is over he knows just how deep the crapper gets. He basically gets the crud kicked out of him at every turn, by people he knows and loves, and his final fate to fairly grim. I have to say that the way this eries progresses is absolutely amazing, and I am glad that I found my way to it.

Kevin has, at this point, become Yancy in the same manner that Marsters has "become" Dresden. I cannot picture anyone else taking up the narration at this point, nor would I want any one else to do so. He puts on Yancy like an old beaten up coat that you can't let go of because you love it so, and acts like it was a tuxedo. There are few narators lucky enough to get a character that they can connect with like he has, and it shows as he tells you the story. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Fun, but where’s the rest?

I am not in love with the narrator, but the story is fun. I need more now.

What do you need a Review for?

Come On now. Really? Ya need a review for this poor guy? You gotta keep going. His life is one big floater in the Cosmic toilet and the struggle is real (well real enough to kind of feel for him). KEEP READING...not the review...the Story! Book 4 is just another addictive potato chip in the bag. Learn who this Savage Prophet finally is and the twisted dark plans still unfolding.
Will Yancy find the Single Malt? Hope so...he'll need it.

Overall Everything was Great. It's good that I got this on audio because it slows me down...it's a 12+ hour listen but I would have consumed this in less I'm sure.

"Voice"

Bluesman/Mage, Yancy, conveys the tale through strong dialogue, both inside Yancys mind and from the lips of the characters.

Through his gruff manner and eye for detail, James A. Hunter depicts his world and its characters with deadpan congruence. Sight, sound, smell, and taste, are explained with ease while sensations and emotions are both shown through crude analogies, witty banter, and decisive action.

Charlie Kevin, the Narrator, matches Yancy's tone to a T. Merging the sick severity of a sadist with cavalier charm, like a pragmatist intent to win a lose-lose scenario.

Yancy really kicks it!

: hard-boiled, urban-fantasy, fantasy, paranormal, action-adventure, snarky, exmilitary, audiobook

Always a good read, Hunter keeps the pace and the interest while the snarkiness just keeps getting better. The guild has lost its mind, and now Yancy is saddled with a desk jockey as his parole supervisor. There is lots of scary stuff, but the publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers here. I loved it!
Charlie Kevin continues to be terrific as Yancy's narrator!

An adventure not to be missed

I enjoyed reading about Yancy Lazarus and his trial and tribulations trying to do the right thing and save the world. Charlie Kevin, narrator, was amazing and brought Yancy to life. His voice was right on the mark and the inflections, reactions and changes in characters were just like watching a movie. The story is amazing. The characters are vivid and the narrator only added to the enjoyment.
