Sarah Jacobs meets Zari Heller when Zari arrives in Cleveland, Ohio, after three years in a German displaced persons camp. It is 1948 and Sarah is twelve years old. When Zari moves into Sarah’s family house, they begin a friendship which lasts throughout their lives. Zari opens Sarah to the world beyond her neighborhood, and Sarah helps Zari survive her life after the war. Together, they bear witness to the Jewish Experience in Europe during the Second World War.
