Publisher's summary

From number one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrew comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power and family bloodlines are the new currency of society....

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the head of her house. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes, powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her house - and her heart.

No HEA here - start of new series arc

Wow. Well done, complex story, set 3 years later, when House Baylor is coming out of their 3 years of protection given to a new house. It’s sink or swim time.
Nevada was hurting herself, trying to work for two houses, so she was pressured into committing to House Rogan by her family, and Catalina was made Head of House Baylor. Augustine, who I’m now calling The Instigator because of the jobs he sends them, gets Catalina out of bed late one night to help stop a young man from jumping off a roof. Turns out, he’s the younger brother of Runa Etterson, the poison mage from Diamond Fire.
And who’s in the thick of things? Alessandro Sagredo. Who is a lot more badass than we had any clue.
And that huge crush she had on Alessandro? We’re now talking Big L. Too bad she’s still worrying about him succumbing to her magic. And he’s got a larger agenda that he’s committed to.
We also get another side of Linus Duncan as Warden for Texas - hard to imagine him as bored. What’s missing is what has happened over time between Linus and Catalina that makes her very dear to him.
Overall, the story is well done, but there’s no happy ending. And this is one of the softest, smoothest cliffhangers I’ve ever seen.
Rankin does an ok job of narration. Her voice is pitched a little high for my comfort level. And I really miss Raudman’s voicing of Grandma Frieda;)

So happy to return to House Baylor

You'll barely even miss Nevada and Rogan. This book has all the things you love about the original stories with new juicy tidbits to keep you looking forward to the next. The new narrator is just as good as the previous one so there's nothing missing on that front either. Great production.

Whew! Better than last one....

What a relief this Hidden Legacy #5, #2 of Catalina’s story, was 100% better than the first.
It took a while to get rolling. I’m not sure why Catalina had to be SO surly all the time to Alessandro, for SO long. Without any humor to it. Just plain old surly. She was beginning to really lose any charm as a heroine. Alessandro was definitely revealed as an unexpected type character. Now he did add some charm though I wish he had teased more or there would have been more banter: what made Rogan and Nevada’s stories so fun. Also a little too much of something, Je ne sais quoi, but not the good stuff, recycled from previous trilogies, BUT the last third of story got interesting and also was finally sounding like Ilona Andrews writing style again. So I have great hope for the series and am excited again.
The new narrator, Emily Rankin, also improved with this installment AND also as story progressed. Still weirds me out to hear Bug not sound like Bug, (or Grandma) but that can’t be helped. In this one, at least the voices are now differentiated. And honestly, as long as Alessandro sounded good, nothing else matters anyway. Well the heroine’s voice has to not be annoying. But honestly, it was amazing improvement. So applause to Emily, because Alessandro did sound good.

great series to listen to.

Not all books are good to listen to, but all of the Ilona Andrews books are fantastic for it.
Love the narrator, she reads it just like I hear it in my head when it comes to the snark.

Great Series

Amazing way of playing out the storyline. Alessandro and Catalina are amazing! Best to start from the begining, but every book gives enough details to listen to them as standalones.
