Publisher's summary

John Milton has been off the grid for six months. He surfaces in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and immediately finds himself drawn into a vicious battle with the narco-gangs that control the borderlands. He saves the life of an idealistic young journalist who has been targeted for execution. The only way to keep her safe is to smuggle her into Texas.

Working with the only untouchable cops in the city and a bounty hunter whose motives are unclear, Milton must keep her safe until the crossing can be made. But when the man looking for her is the legendary assassin Santa Muerta - Saint Death - that's a lot easier said than done.

Mark Dawson has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, The Art of Falling Apart and Subpoena Colada, have been published in multiple languages.

John Milton to the rescue

I absolutely love hearing John Milton working his magic! He fears no one and helps the good guy no matter what the cost. I wish there were more of him IRL

Lost all respect for author...

I cannot stand lazy and stupid writing...one of those examples is the age old favorite copied from too many movies to count:
Put down your gun and we can “..fill in the stupid here...”
If you put your gun down and in this case hand over your only leverage...well then you are absolutely f’kd and not in good way.
At best the enemy just shoot you, at worst they beat you up and then shoot you....but not in movies and this book ...no the enemy talk you to death...or try to so you can escape...just roll your eyes horrible.

The funny thing is that the rest of the story was not all that horrible but was completely overshadowed by stupid - I was actually thinking of giving it a 1 star but there are good parts so... yea
If you think I am wrong then I can show you ones that actually pull that scene off with some credibility...still stupid but with more logic..

Dawson is my new favorite author.

I've read the first 2 books in the John Milton series. 1st was good, 2nd was great. Nothing like a hero with flaws and a checkered past.

Hit with a few misses

This series like the combination of old British Equalizer from the 1980s with Edward Woodward and “The Fugitive”. Intrigue and action!

Misses - falls for the hackneyed “gun show loop hole” myth. And while I generally really enjoy David Thorpe as a performer/narrator…Bless his Heart - he cannot do an American accent. Really bad. He Texas accent sounds more Canadian than either American or Texan.

Otherwise. Very entertaining!!

Why research?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

It was obvious the author did little research, if any, glaring errors ..... Made story even less believable.

So many twists

This book had a lot of violence (like the rest of the series so far), twists and turns, and other characters sort of took the lead this time. Once again, there was a huge cliffhanger. I'm guessing that is the way the whole series will be. So, if you get this book (and I recommend you do so), be prepared to be left hanging and have the next book ready to go on your device.

Needs more Character Development and Detail

The book feels abridged. There are gaps in the time line, there could and should be more character development, and more detail. And if John Milton is the UK's top agent the UK is in trouble. Missing is all the spy and assassin craft that are in other novels (John Rein, Victor, John Wells, Quinn). There is so much potential and the writing is pretty good, but just not good enough to be a 4 star and a long way to go to get 5 stars. I want to get lost in this book and series but it just isn't complete.

Story weak, narrator good!

Need more action in the story line for a highly skilled agent like John Milton. All the supporting cast in this story are very weak. I will read one more JM, Book 3 and if the same weak story line with weak supporting cast the it will be the last one.
