Publisher's Summary

The planet has succumbed to a monstrous virus. Those who die from the infection return as savage zombies hell-bent on spreading the virus to the rest of the human population. The UK and Ireland are the last hold-outs, but when the infrastructure supporting their self-imposed quarantine collapses, it's everyone for themselves.

Mike Fletcher and his sister Emma live in Leeds. With the city's streets overrun by the dead, their only option is to flee. They take their younger siblings and set off to find their last remaining relative in the far north-west of Scotland.

As they travel north they encounter other survivors - but who can they trust? Their terrifying journey will require them to confront horrors both human and inhuman, in the outside world and within themselves. Will they ever find a safe haven?

Rise of the RAMs

This book is one of the first I read in the growing Zompoc genre. I was a late comer to this fad and grabbed this book when I first subscribed to Kindle Unlimited. I have to say that this book started my love for the genre and made me a true fan. This book grabbed me from the very first page and never let go!

The first chapter is very different from what I have read in other Zombie books. Mike Fletcher and his sister, Emma, are struggling with the impending death of their stepfather, Alex, all while trying to protect their younger siblings, Jake and Sammy, from the horrors around them.

After Alex's death, we are introduced to a Doctor and Nurse, Lucy and Samantha, who will come to be very important characters in this series. I love the way that Mr. Artinian introduces each character, then slowly lets them develop through the book. Even though this is a Zombie book, it's also a very well-written book. There is a lot more here than just smashing in heads and running for your life.

There is plenty of action as the group makes the decision to leave the city and travel to Scotland to be with their Gran. Along the way, they meet other families just trying to survive. As if the Reanimated creatures aren't enough, there are also those humans (?) who try to take advantage of the chaos.

It is nice to read a zombie book that isn't just kill or be killed. There are plenty of heartwarming moments, as well as poignant ones when beloved characters meet their demise. There is also a lot of hope throughout the book as the group has to fight their way to safety. Mike is an amazing character and carries the story most of the time. Mike has anger issues, but learns to use that to his advantage as he fights to save his family.

Mr. Artinian throws in some entertaining cultural references along the way that added a lot to the book IMHO. It's always nice to have some breaks in the zombie bashing action!

When I found out that the book was available on Audible, I jumped at the chance to listen to it. S.W. Salzman is one of my favorite narrators, especially in the Zombie genre. He does his usual outstanding job and really added a lot to my (already overwhelming) enjoyment of the book.

As Mike says, "This isn't some post-apocalyptic Scooby Doo!".

Excellent!

This is a really good book. Great take on zombies and how it could be temporarily contained if government got their crap together. Still there are no absolutes and always human error. Can’t wait for the next installment because I need to know what happens with Joseph..... can’t say it’s a secret when even he doesn’t know what’s going on with him. Can’t help but feel other would recognize it in him but then that would make for a different story.
Salzman did an amazing job narrating! He always does!
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.

Great start to the series !

This was my first audible book and it was really good. The narrator pulls you even more into the story. A very enjoyable experience. This is an exciting series.

Very pleasant

I'm so pleased with the voice. So glad it didn't sound computerized. It was so different listening to this great story than reading it. A pleasant surprise.

Safe Haven

I love this series, it is by Christopher Artinian , a fairly new author but one who will be around a long time. The zombies are called Rams and are as bad as some of the gangs. This story takes place in the UK and Ireland and revolves around Mike, Lucy, and the rest f his family. They have to leave their home and city to find a place when there are no Rams or gangs. They have one bad adventure after another, Just read the first book and you will want to read the following ones

good zompoc story

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I thought this was a solid entrance into the zombie apocalypse genre. The author does a good job of bringing the human element to the story. The story itself is pretty good, too. The narration is great. All in all, this was a great book, if you like this genre.

Dial Z for Zombie

I'm always a sucker for a good zombie book and this one isn't half bad, good enough that I think I'll carry on until the next one when it comes out and see what the author does with it. Certainly, the epilogue to this one sent a shiver down the spine and was definitely one of the finest moments of the whole book. It's a story set after an initial zombie apocalypse has struck the world and yet Britain and Ireland are still just about holding out.

Of course, as the blurb says and any zombie fan will tell you that rarely turns out well and very soon Mike, his sister Emma and others are slammed into chaos. There's nothing genre-busting here, just a good old-fashioned zombie apocalypse story where people both live and the dead show their dark side. But it's a very decent story, and although the characters did at times have a tendency to make speeches rather than engage in normal dialogue it hummed along nicely.

S W Salzman obviously has some pedigree for narrating zombie books and he does a decent job of this one. I'm fairly forgiving about accent details judging from other reviews I have read of books that I have enjoyed. Salzman does enable clear distinction between male and female voices but other than that he doesn't have a wide range of styles. The biggest problem is that all of the characters sound a bit Eastern European which for a book full of English characters doesn't strike the perfect tone. Try the sample before buying if you think that will be an issue for you.

All in all, it was good for me and I look forward to seeing where this goes next. Mike, is certainly an interesting character worth following. It isn't hugely original in any way but it isn't trying to be and it is a decent story that rattles along at a decent pace.

Where it all began....

I don't usually go for audio books but there's a first time for everything! I read every day and since I was decorating I decided to go hands free and get audible so I could listen while I painted. The Safe Haven series is a gripping read and having it brought to life vocally adds a new dimension. The story is enthralling. Wonderful characters and a descriptive storyline leave you on the edge of your seat! I did find it rather strange that a story set in the UK has an American narrator but if you look over that, he did a great job. Good distinction between the characters and a quick pace to the narration. Looking forward to listening to more of Mr Artinians tales on Audible soon!

Good book

I loved the story line and will follow it but the narrator spoilt it for me, it felt as if he was in a race to see how fast he could read the book.

Captured me from the first chapter

Loved this start to the series. Interesting strong characters that you can relate too. Enjoyed the different spin on this genre, with how containment was trying to be achieved. I just really enjoyed listening and once started couldn’t stop. Left me hanging for the next instalment.
