Publisher's Summary

The planet has succumbed to a monstrous virus. Those who die from the infection return as savage zombies hell-bent on spreading the virus to the rest of the human population. The UK and Ireland are the last hold-outs, but when the infrastructure supporting their self-imposed quarantine collapses, it's everyone for themselves.

Mike Fletcher and his sister Emma live in Leeds. With the city's streets overrun by the dead, their only option is to flee. They take their younger siblings and set off to find their last remaining relative in the far north-west of Scotland.

As they travel north they encounter other survivors - but who can they trust? Their terrifying journey will require them to confront horrors both human and inhuman, in the outside world and within themselves. Will they ever find a safe haven?

Rise of the RAMs

This book is one of the first I read in the growing Zompoc genre. I was a late comer to this fad and grabbed this book when I first subscribed to Kindle Unlimited. I have to say that this book started my love for the genre and made me a true fan. This book grabbed me from the very first page and never let go!

The first chapter is very different from what I have read in other Zombie books. Mike Fletcher and his sister, Emma, are struggling with the impending death of their stepfather, Alex, all while trying to protect their younger siblings, Jake and Sammy, from the horrors around them.

After Alex's death, we are introduced to a Doctor and Nurse, Lucy and Samantha, who will come to be very important characters in this series. I love the way that Mr. Artinian introduces each character, then slowly lets them develop through the book. Even though this is a Zombie book, it's also a very well-written book. There is a lot more here than just smashing in heads and running for your life.

There is plenty of action as the group makes the decision to leave the city and travel to Scotland to be with their Gran. Along the way, they meet other families just trying to survive. As if the Reanimated creatures aren't enough, there are also those humans (?) who try to take advantage of the chaos.

It is nice to read a zombie book that isn't just kill or be killed. There are plenty of heartwarming moments, as well as poignant ones when beloved characters meet their demise. There is also a lot of hope throughout the book as the group has to fight their way to safety. Mike is an amazing character and carries the story most of the time. Mike has anger issues, but learns to use that to his advantage as he fights to save his family.

Mr. Artinian throws in some entertaining cultural references along the way that added a lot to the book IMHO. It's always nice to have some breaks in the zombie bashing action!

When I found out that the book was available on Audible, I jumped at the chance to listen to it. S.W. Salzman is one of my favorite narrators, especially in the Zombie genre. He does his usual outstanding job and really added a lot to my (already overwhelming) enjoyment of the book.

As Mike says, "This isn't some post-apocalyptic Scooby Doo!".

Excellent!

This is a really good book. Great take on zombies and how it could be temporarily contained if government got their crap together. Still there are no absolutes and always human error. Can’t wait for the next installment because I need to know what happens with Joseph..... can’t say it’s a secret when even he doesn’t know what’s going on with him. Can’t help but feel other would recognize it in him but then that would make for a different story.
Salzman did an amazing job narrating! He always does!
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.

1st in Safe Haven series:Rise of the Rams!

I really enjoyed listening to this exciting zombie apocalypse book! The main characters, Emma and Mike...and the people they picked up along the way, had very indepth personalities. There was plenty of action, but not non-stop killing and violence. It did have everything to make a well rounded story: love, family, excitement, twists, turns and some surprises. The narrator was great! This story had people from several different countries and he did a good job of changing the voices with each person.
Although there were plenty of loses along the way, this had a happy ending and left me wanting to listen to the next book in the series immediately! I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the Zombie genre!

Rise of the Rams

This read is fantastic. It pulled me in from the first page to the last. And had me on the edge of my seat. Its a real page turner. This is fast paced and action packed. And the story is epic. The Author does a Fantastic job at the world building and bringing out the characters. The Narrator does a Fantastic job as well. This is a must read for Zombie Lovers.

Dial Z for Zombie

I'm always a sucker for a good zombie book and this one isn't half bad, good enough that I think I'll carry on until the next one when it comes out and see what the author does with it. Certainly, the epilogue to this one sent a shiver down the spine and was definitely one of the finest moments of the whole book. It's a story set after an initial zombie apocalypse has struck the world and yet Britain and Ireland are still just about holding out.

Of course, as the blurb says and any zombie fan will tell you that rarely turns out well and very soon Mike, his sister Emma and others are slammed into chaos. There's nothing genre-busting here, just a good old-fashioned zombie apocalypse story where people both live and the dead show their dark side. But it's a very decent story, and although the characters did at times have a tendency to make speeches rather than engage in normal dialogue it hummed along nicely.

S W Salzman obviously has some pedigree for narrating zombie books and he does a decent job of this one. I'm fairly forgiving about accent details judging from other reviews I have read of books that I have enjoyed. Salzman does enable clear distinction between male and female voices but other than that he doesn't have a wide range of styles. The biggest problem is that all of the characters sound a bit Eastern European which for a book full of English characters doesn't strike the perfect tone. Try the sample before buying if you think that will be an issue for you.

All in all, it was good for me and I look forward to seeing where this goes next. Mike, is certainly an interesting character worth following. It isn't hugely original in any way but it isn't trying to be and it is a decent story that rattles along at a decent pace.

Good book

I loved the story line and will follow it but the narrator spoilt it for me, it felt as if he was in a race to see how fast he could read the book.

Terrible choice of narrator

I love the book, the plot, the characters but it needs redoing as the narrating is completely wrong. The man himself isn’t a bad voice actor however he has a very strong South African accent which is difficult to understand in parts and extremely grating considering this is set in Yorkshire. I’d love a local accent but I understand that may not be realistic so at least a plain voice with no strong accents at all could be a good compromise? Please redo as I feel it spoils a really good listen. Thank you

Creeptastic!

I loved the beginning of this series, the 'Rams' are seriously creepy and 'Mikey' is my hero - He is willing to do anything and everything to keep his family safe. I couldn't stop once I started this book and can't wait to start book 2, I feel a book binge coming on!

Safe haven book 1

Safe Haven book 1 has a great story line and the building up of the characters though gradual was a great idea. Though the narrator was good the accents were a bit off kilter but it isn’t going to stop me continuing this series. Well worth a listen it won’t disappoint .

Very Enjoyable Zombie Horror Set In Britain

At last I have found a really good Zombie story set in the UK!
This is a very exciting story and it moves at a fast pace throughout the book, I enjoyed getting to know the main characters and I am about to start book two. I struggled a little with the narrators accents which seemed more a cross between South African and Australian sometimes, but once I got used to that it did not effect my enjoyment of this story.
I was given this in exchange for an unbiased and objective review.

Excellent

this is the first in a series and a great listen. I got so engrossed in the story that I was surprised when I got to the end.
The characters are well rounded and likeable and I can't wait to hear more of their story. Without giving anything away I can see some nasty surprises coming shortly for them .......

A Phenomenal Debut of the Safe Heven Universe...

Both the story & narration are absolutely flawless. By far, one of my favourite books in a long while, now with the added benefit of being an audiobook, so you can listen on the move.

Story is good but

The story was good but narration was terrible. The accents are so bad I'm not sure some of the time if there meant to be English, Russian, South African, part of the Mob or Scottish.
I've listened to other books narrated by S.W. Salzman and liked the book. It just the accents. I only battled through this book because the next book has a different narrator other wise I would of given up.

Captured me from the first chapter

Loved this start to the series. Interesting strong characters that you can relate too. Enjoyed the different spin on this genre, with how containment was trying to be achieved. I just really enjoyed listening and once started couldn’t stop. Left me hanging for the next instalment.
