Publisher's summary

After discovering six gold Roman coins buried in the mud of the Devil's Dyke, Barnabas Sackett enthusiastically invests in goods that he will offer for trade in America. But Sackett has a powerful enemy: Rupert Genester, nephew of an earl, wants him dead. A battlefield promise made to Sackett’s father threatens Genester’s inheritance. So on the eve of his departure for America, Sackett is attacked and thrown into the hold of a pirate ship. Genester's orders are for him to disappear into the waters of the Atlantic. But after managing to escape, Sackett makes his way to the Carolina coast. He sees in the raw, abundant land the promise of a bright future. But before that dream can be realized, he must first return to England and discover the secret of his father's legacy.

Good historical novel

I first read this book back in 1985. I was looking for a western novel to read when I decided to re-read the beginning of the Sackett series. One can never go wrong reading a L’Amour book.

In this book we follow Barnabas Sackett ’s life in England and his migration to America with a few key friends. They explore the unexplored areas of what will become the State of North Carolina. There is action not only on the sea but also on land. One of the things I like about L’Amour’s writing is he works history of the era and place into the story as well as accurate geography. He is a master storyteller. This is a good historical novel.

The book is five hours and fourteen minutes. John Curless does a good job narrating the book. Curless is an English born actor. He has won two Earphone Awards for his audiobook narrations.

Great Start for the Series

Where does Sackett's Land rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This story teller keeps you entertained as he builds the character of the quintessential hero. The humble beginnings and the lack of a formal education do not stand in the way of this determined young fellow. His father taught him how to survive and how to protect himself. His innate wisdom, courage and fairness cause him to become the leader of his mates. His natural traits and capabilities carry him through tough battles and provide him with the survival skills necessary to cope with a whole new frontier. Can't wait to start the next in the series.
Cheers, Ken

A change of pace from Louis L'Amour.

I am a long time fan of Louis L'Amour's Westerns. This prequel is set in Elizabethan times and has the protagonist traveling from England to the New World. As always it is well written and extremely accurate in it's historicity. I can't wait to move on to the next book in the series.

Not a western...more pirate story

This was not what I expected of a Louis L'Amour book. I probably should have read the description better. Story & performance were both good...just not what I anticipated.

Excellent narration, amazing story.

I love Louis L'amour's writing style, and the narrator brings the story to life. I was named after Tyrel Sackett, and I'm deeply grateful to hear the stories again.

I grew up on these books.

They bring back the good memories of my youth. And remind me of my personal family values.
