Publisher's summary

Do you sometimes feel as if you're just going through the motions in life? Are you good at looking and acting as if you're fine, but secretly feel lonely and disconnected? If so, you are not alone. The world is full of people who have an innate sense that something is wrong with them - who feel they live on the outside looking in, but have no explanation for this feeling and no way to put it into words.

If you are one of these people, you may fear that you are not connected enough to your spouse, or that you don't feel pleasure or love as profoundly as others do. You may drink too much, or eat too much, or risk too much, in an attempt to feel something good.

Running on Empty will give you clear strategies for how to heal, and offers a special chapter for mental-health professionals. In the world of human suffering, this book is an emotional smart bomb meant to eradicate the effects of an invisible enemy.

Epiphany

Dr. Webb described my symptoms perfectly. And also my childhood perfectly. Like the white space in a painting, it's not what happened, but rather what didn't happen. Having this knowledge will help me to create and plan treatment. Thank you Dr. Webb!

Great book but the narrator wasn't great

The book is amazing and provides a lot of insight but unfortunately the narrator is so robotic sounding that it made it extremely difficult to follow the book. I ended up not finishing listening to it because the voicing was so awful.

The story and information is very useful. The performance is not very entertaining and hard to follow. However, overall all information is great

Must listen more then once.

There is so much content you will listen over and over. Lots of insight with many great examples that are referred to over and over. the examples enhance the picture of how emotional neglect permeates the every area of our lives.

excellent, relevant material

this audible book would be much more effective and useful if the chapters were broken down further into subchapters. this would allow for review of specific subtopics or to skip vignettes.

Simply Amazing!

This book is amazing! I'm so grateful to have encountered it. I think every parent should read this book, whether they're a "good enough" parent or not. I wish my parents had read this when I was a baby. Very grateful to have this new perspective and some concrete steps to take to heal.

I enjoyed getting to understand myself better

Author is very insightful. I appreciate her writing on this subject. But mostly I appreciate her suggestions on how to overcome childhood emotional neglect. I see it in myself and all my siblings. But especially I see my parents were emotionally neglected as well. I can appreciate how it would be impossible for my parents to give something they never received!!! Wonderfully written!

Great content. Struggled with robotic narrator.

It hit the nail on the head for me with content but the narrator's voice was too robotic for me.
