Editorial reviews

Hilariously cynical, yet more naïve than he'd like to believe, Rumpole is taken in by the lifestyle of a hippie-type school teacher brought up on a narcotics charge in Rumpole and the Alternative Lifestyle. Leo McKern, as the voice of Rumpole, brings out all the swagger resting just under the surface of this decorous old barrister. Based on John Mortimer's BBC radio plays, this audiobook will have listeners laughing along as they wonder how Rumpole will get himself out of this one!

Publisher's summary

Our Horace Rumpole, the most traditional of traditionalists, defends a hippie-like schoolteacher on a drugs charge. Quite unexpectedly, he finds himself attracted to her and to her unusual lifestyle.

A Mortimer/McKern Pleasure

Leo McKern is Horace Rumple and this tale of 1970s counter-culture jurisprudence is a gem. As always, John Mortimer's stories may be about trials and the law but they are also about people and society. In this one, we get a look at WWII nostalgia and narcs with the same even handedness that Mortimer brings to all his stories. So join the "old fella" and enjoy the journey.
