Publisher's summary

Deputy Dorie Berenger knew the day would go from bad to worse when she found a stoned alligator in the town drunk’s swimming pool. Then DEA agent Richard Starke shows up in Gator Bait, Louisiana, giving out orders and insults faster than you can cast a fishing line.

Dorie knows the residents of Gator Bait aren’t going to talk to a stranger, especially a Yankee, but she's stuck with Richard until he catches his bad guy. With no other alternative to restore peace to the small town, Dorie agrees to help Richard catch a criminal and in the process, uncovers decades of secrets that have been hiding deep in the Louisiana bayou.

Good book

I enjoyed the book but kept thinking I had heard it before because of the similarities to the authors other works. So if you like her other work you'll like this...just don't be surprised if you feel deja Vu.
Unrelated, as someone from that part of the world I was tickled pink to hear towns and places I know referenced.

exciting mystery in a very small town

The plot was generally unpredictable and the characters were delightful. Dory was a different kind of heroine than usual.

Wasn’t expecting soft porn

I love Jana Deleon’s Miss Fortune series and expected to enjoy this as much. What I wasn’t expecting was explicit sex scenes. The story could have been told just as well without them.
This book would have earned four stars if it hadn’t been for that. The story (sans sex) was good, exciting and full of Deleon’s quirky characters.

Not what I expected

There is a lot to like about this story. The humour is good and fits with the story. I liked Dorie and Joe and Richard and Jenny and Gator Bait in general. The story had twists I didn't see coming. It is not a cozy and there is a hefty dose of romance to go along with the mystery.

I agree with others though... the narration left something to be desired. Definitely not South Louisiana. Typical cliche of Southerners speak slow and sound kind of dumb. We don't. This narrator was just distracting. There are two explicit sex scenes. They added nothing to the story and honestly not what I want to listen to when driving, but as others mentioned, easy to skip. Joe goes to see the minister, it added nothing to the story. It just kept going on and on and on. So, I eventually skipped to the next to last chapter to wrap it up. I was just about finished anyway, so I don't feel as if I missed much. I was sad at who the bad guy was, but thought the ending worked and with humour to boot.

Overall, I enjoyed it.

Close Cajun Town

After the second chapter I was about check this title off my list. The way the reader emphasized the end of sentences was getting on my nerves. One more chapter and the story began to become interesting. I got over the narrator , and the phony accents actually helped me understand what character was talking at what time. This is a fun story. PS. We all don’t sound like that.

Good book - not so good narrator

The narrator obviously thought she was mimicking a southern Louisiana accent. She sounded condensation get. It was a good book but it needed a different narrator. It was hard to get past her ridiculous accent.

Ayup this hear'un agood'un.

This tale started out as a more or less typical DeLeon story line small Southern town(DEEP SOUTH that is).
Complete with unique endearing characters similar to the Missfortune Series but not quite the same formula. Oh and a unique surprise twist at the end.
The only thing that I disliked were the explicit sex scenes, not many thank goodness.
Personally I don't need step by step instruction. Been there done that and I like to let my mind build my own scenes. Yeah a little heavy petting kissing etcetera. then its morning well you get the picture.
Enough of that rant the story and the narration are worth the purchase. So 4.25 stars.
