Story
Even though I’m around hot football players every afternoon, they are not allowed to date me. If they even come close to flirting, my dad, Coach “The Boss” Davis, makes them run laps around the field until they puke. Not only has he forbidden me to date anyone at all, he’s even made me the football team’s water girl so he can keep tabs on me. What Dad doesn’t know is that I spend every last second of those two blissful hours of practice in the scorching California heat staring at Tyson Blake. He is the epitome of perfection. And Dad hates him.

My plan was perfect: convince my best friend and school quarterback, Ethan, to be the final prize for my matchmaking test where the proceeds go to sending the band to Paris. Plus, if it matches me with my lifelong crush, that's a bonus, right? What could go wrong? Apparently, a lot. First, the test matches me and Ethan. Which is easy to explain. Computers make mistakes all the time, right? Second, the girl I switch myself for seems perfect for Ethan. Maybe a bit too perfect. Third, my date with my crush goes horribly wrong, and my first kiss tanks.

A mistletoe kiss is just a simple kiss, right? Wrong. All I want to do during this Christmas break is survive. A week at the cabin with our family’s friends/rivals, the Stephensons, every yuletide activity is turned into a competition where my family must win. Every. One. Yep. I was attempting to be loyal until Jacob and I kiss. Sure, it was a forced one brought on by mistletoe tradition, but there was something in the way he held me and pressed his lips to mine that told me, he just might be feeling something more.

Publisher's Summary
I live by three rules. One: I never get lower than an A in any class. Two: I never lose a cross-country race. And three: I never talk to Cade Kelley.
Well, number three came crashing down the moment Principal Connell asks me to guide Cade back onto the right path. Something about helping him turn his life around. If only Principal Connell knew our history, he’d understand just what he’s asking.
But, I have an incessant need to please all adults, so of course I say yes. When Cade seems pleased as well, I can’t help but wonder if this is part of some scheme. A plan he’s worked up to finish me once and for all. Apparently, what he did in junior high wasn’t enough.
Just when I think I have everything figured out, my life spirals out of control. Suddenly, adults suck - especially parents - and pleasing them becomes the last thing I want to do. What confuses me even more is in the moment I choose to run away, the first person I go to is the one guy to whom I swore I would never get close.
Hopefully, the Cade I’ve uncovered won’t hurt me, because I’m so close to breaking.

Cute, fun, flirty and plenty of YA angst!
I'm really enjoying these Rules of Love books! I've already read book #3 as well. I couldn't help myself. They are just so much fun. Yes, they're YA and I'm a grown woman. But I just can't help reading these fun, lighthearted and very sweet stories about young love and teens figuring out life and how to navigate through the craziness of those years.
If you're a YA lover, I highly recommend this series. They can be read in any order and bring hours of enjoyment! ;-)
Do you remember your first crush? What about your first "sworn enemy?" I definitely remember several of my first crushes. Ha! Young love at preschool and on the elementary school ground. *.*
I don't think I really had a sworn enemy though, a couple girls that I didn't quite mesh with but more so on their part than mine. But I think that's the same with everyone in life, trying to navigate friendships, relationships, struggles, school, work, everything.
Penny thinks she's doing pretty well and life is going swimmingly. Until the moment when it all changes. How did her life get so messed up and complicated. Definitely the moment when Cade came into it. Well, maybe not the moment back in Junior High with his comment and teasing, but the moment in high school where she's asked to help him with his school work. Yep, definitely then. Now she's running moment to moment trying to figure out her feelings, her life and friendships.
The author knows how to write some cute YA scenes and mix in plenty of angst and drama. It can't be YA without all of the angst and drama right? I love it! Penny and Cade were fun characters to watch them realize that what they thought wasn't quite what was real. I loved the flirty banter and sweet/tender moments. Not sweet and tender necessarily in a romantic sense but in a friend being there for another friend in a moment of need.
Grab a copy, or one of each of the three books in the series and have fun! My teenage daughters and preteen have been listening to these with me or reading them and have enjoyed them as well. I'm really enjoying this narrator a lot, her voice works great as a teenage girl and she can add in a lot of personality for the characters while narrating!
Content: Clean. Some kissing, the couple fall asleep together after a late night talking, nothing sexual happens. There is talk about divorce, jail and broken families, and how the characters navigate those different circumstances. I thought it was written in a great way but if those are sensitive topics for you, now you know that this books discusses them.
Happy Reading!!!

Better than I was expecting!
This story turned out to be quite different to how I thought it was going to be. I’m not one for young adult/college stories. I’m not a fan of the teenage drama. Whilst this story did have an element of drama to it, I didn’t feel that it was over done. There was enough serious elements to it that I could believe it to be realistic. The character development didn’t feel shallow - they actually had substance to them & the clichés were kept to a minimum which I appreciated. Although I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is now my favourite genre, I can honestly say this author did a good job with the story.

Don't judge a book by its cover
I listened to the audiobook of this. This YA series for new to me and the author is still fairly new to me also.
Penny is smart, athletic and seems to have it all together until the principal asks her to help Cade get his act together. She only does it because it will look good on her application for college. It seems as if once Penny starts helping Cade (her sworn enemy since an incident in junior high) her life starts to fall apart. She blames him, but it's not his fault, just a coincedence and when she reaches are breaking point Cade's the only one she feels she can turn to.
This is a cute enemies to something-more-than-friends story. It has all the angst and problems of the teen years we all remember, but it also shows you can't judge a book by its cover. This is the second book in a new series.
I thought the narrator did a wonderful job.

Great series!
Another fun read about The Rules of Love! Meyer’s second book in the series brings a new love story with new challenges. Readers will relate to the angst and excitement of teen love along with real life trials. Will long-held grudges and prejudices keep Penny from recognizing Cade’s potential? Is it possible one’s nemesis can actually be one’s knight in shining armor? Some fun adventures with this unlikely couple, who have more in common than appearances had let on.
