Publisher's summary

War rages between the Confederation and the Union. Shattered fleets watch each other warily across a war-torn frontier. Both sides are licking their wounds, gathering strength to continue the fight.

Captain Tyler Barron and the crew of Dauntless are finally enjoying the rest they've earned while their aging battleship, Dauntless, gets the repairs and refit it desperately needs. But their respite will be short-lived. In the Badlands, deep in the haunted vastness of pre-Cataclysmic space, a new discovery threatens to upset the balance of power. Orbiting a world in a distant system is an ancient battleship, vastly larger and enormously more advanced than anything possessed by the contending powers...and the Union has already sent forces to seize it. The Confederation has no ships close enough to intervene, to get there before the enemy...none save Dauntless.

Barron and his crew must race across the Badlands, find the ancient artifact, and somehow hold it, keep the Union forces from taking it, until reinforcements arrive. They will be outnumbered and outgunned, but there can be no retreat. Not this time. Nothing less than the fate of all human-inhabited space is at stake.

If the Confederation is able to rediscover the technology of the ancients, it will be safe for generations to come, its defensive forces untouchable by its enemies. But if the Union gets there first, if it can adapt the incredible power of mankind's lost technology, it will gain the power to enslave all humanity.

This fight isn't for territory. It isn't for position or tactical advantage. It is for the future.

Great story, but...

Great story, but the reader is super monotone. Most characters sound the same....
Almost kills the series after the original reader did so well on the first book

Dammed good entertainment

Jay is one of my favorite authors. He never fails to deliver on a well written novel that captures the moment perfectly. Jay paints a story with words that captures the sites and smells, the angst and anxiety of peril and victory completely as if he lived it first hand!

Solid Series, but Too Hollywood

Generally I like the series and the main characters. He does a good job of growing the characters and making sure we know who the important supporting characters are. However, he repeats the same grave descriptions to the point they become irritating at times and distracts from the movement of the story. Sometimes in the car I yell, "I get it! GO ON!" or "Not AGAIN, please!" I have also started seeing a Hollywood bigger explosions pattern. The main characters on the main ship keep fighting off more and more and more ships. Example, in this book the main captain and crew ends up fighting off a total of 5 ships. Everything is worse and worse and worse, oh this is paralleled in a really big battle light years away, and then SUDDENLY the protagonist pulls out that little ooomph and destroys the enemy in a single blow after being forlorn. But never say die twice too many! I get this from Hollywood, I don't need or want it in decent book, I expect growth and movement. This is not to say he totally fails, he doesn't. The books are solidly crafted and I do like the characters in the end, but editing out some "oh, dear lordy" melodrama wouldn't shorten the books too much and keep me from rolling my eyes in frustration at times in listening.

Good story great series

Love Jay Allan books and Jeffrey Kafer could read the phone book and make it sound good. The first two books were better but it's still a great series and I can't wait for #4.

I like the series but...

I really like the personal interactions among the characters in the story and the performance is good. The issue I have is that the space battles are just not realistic and I prefer more realism. The tactics used by both sides in the battles are essentially WW2 tactics where two carrier fleets sail into each other and slug it out. In an actual scenario, I would think that stealth, advanced missiles, kinetic weapons, AI, and automation would play prominent roles. As was has evolved in our time, we see trends where humans still lose their lives but in much fewer numbers due to advanced technology, intelligence and doctrines designed to take advantage of such. I think more real science is needed.

Add to that the superb job of narration served up by Jeffrey Kafer, and you’ve got some great military sci-fi waiting for your enjoyment. This book is a keeper!
