  • Summary

  • Do you love rebels? Do you want to live in a place where outcasts shine their brightest? Welcome to Romanistan! We're your friendly neighborhood Gypsies, celebrating Romani identity and outcast culture, and practicing good diplomatic relations with other marginalized communities. We love the rebels who are living their truth, even if it clashes with tradition. We also love tradition and honoring our roots. This podcast is for everyone who loves and supports Roma & related groups, and anyone who feels like a misfit and wants to uplift others to create a beautiful community. We feature pioneers in culture, fashion, art, literature, music, activism, cuisine, and everything good. We adore the intersections of gender, sexuality, spirituality, ability, and identity. We cover all topics, from the difficult to the glorious. Let's sit crooked and talk straight. Hosted by Paulina Verminski and Jessica Reidy. We reclaim the slur Gypsy, but if you aren’t Romani, we prefer you don't use it. xoxo. The Romani people are a diasporic ethnic group originally from northwest India, circa the 10th century. Now, Roma live all over the globe, and due to centuries of oppression, slavery, genocide, and other atrocities, Roma are still fighting for basic human rights. We seek to raise awareness of who Roma are, and highlight Romani resilience, creativity, & culture.

  • Ruth Sullivan and Traveller Pride
    Jun 16 2024

Welcome to our second pride month interview!

Ruth Sullivan is a director of Traveller Pride, a UK based organisation that brings together Traveller people from the various UK communities to celebrate every aspect of our identities. Ruth is Queer and from a mixed Romany and Gorger family. She discovered her Romany ethnicity in her teens when her Grandad finally opened up about his life to his family. She has been working ever since to discover more about her ethnicity and culture, and to connect to people from her community.

“[Traveller Pride is a] group made up of Travellers (used as inclusively as possible) who are LGBT+ (likewise) who want to provide a platform for our intersectional community. We act as a network that can provide guidance, support and information to make life easier for LGBT+ Travellers as well as providing essential services, meetup spaces and collaborating with other organisations to make them more welcoming to us.” https://www.lgbttravellerpride.com/

Romani crushes are Dee Cooper, Jo Clement, Delaine Le Bas, & Fairuza Balk.

a very chalenging podcast

I like the comparison with land ownership and Romani poeple and how much of access of land ownership it is incentive to own land. The similar happend with Romani people with end of 19th century with abolition of slavory in Romania who were forced to live with their landlords till the beginning of the socialism era.
