Awesome story!

This is an awesome story with great characters and a thrilling plot. The story was long, but there were several twists and turns in the story to fill the time. And the narrator was fantastic!

Not sure what the previous reviewer disliked this story so much. I found it thoroughly entertaining and well worth the credit!

Wonderful narrator, so-so story

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend it, with warnings about its shortcomings.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I don't know yet.

Which character – as performed by Natalie Ross – was your favorite?

Bowie.

Do you think Where There's Smoke needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

If Sandra Brown were to write a follow-up now, it would be far better than the original.

Any additional comments?

This was a terrible book in so many ways, but I had to keep listening in spite of its many faults. The best feature was Natalie Ross's first rate narration. It went a long way in overcoming the book's shortcomings. I am a big fan of Sandra Brown, but this 1993 title is not up to her current standard. Much of it reads like a trashy romance, with a heroine who makes as many stupid choices as your average horror story stooge. However, there were moments that showed the author Sandra Brown would come. There were unexpected twists that compelled me to finish the book, even as I groaned at the cheesy dialogue and obvious errors in logic and facts. It was also enlightening to see how much our social attitudes have grown in the past twenty-two years. I'm not sorry I read the book.

Dud

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There is WAY TOO MUCH filler. So much going on that is really not important at all. I get why some of the characters were introduced - but too much time was spent on completely insignificant stories. Additionally, the trip to South America was way too farfetched and lent little to the story.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sandra Brown again?

Yes. I have enjoyed some of her works in the past.

Have you listened to any of Natalie Ross’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I dont remember. However, I though she did an excellent job on the different characters.

Could you see Where There's Smoke being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No!

Any additional comments?

I am writing this review mainly because I depend on reviews in making my decisions. This book is ok. I agree with previous reviewers that said the main characters were unlikeable. Honestly, I couldn't have cared less if they ended up together or not. I really dont know why they did based on the events of the story. On top of that, the woman was an idiot. She supposedly made these career decisions against the will of her parents and made decisions about going to South American - decisions that would make one think she strong willed; however, she sits by and lets the men in her life make decisons that ruin her life. Those are conflicting personality traits that make her unlikeable. And the main guy is just a major jerk.

Not up to expectations

I decided to pick up Where There's Smoke after devouring both Mirror Image and White Hot. I'm glad it was on sale. The story wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to my high expectations after reading the first 2 books. Although the book maintained a good pace throughout with many twists and turns, I had a hard time enjoying it, especially after its conclusion.

One of the big problems with the audiobook was that the main characters weren’t likable. Key was more relatable than Lara, but halfway through the book he was still acting like a playboy. And while Lara wasn't a bad person, I found her very self-righteous, which turned me off her character. She was always preaching or harping at someone, which was funny since an affair had landed her in her current situation.

However, my biggest dislikes were the sex scenes and the final mystery. Usually I have no issues with sex in books, but in this case I found the vocabulary used vulgar. It wasn't sexy at all! And then the twist at the very end also put me off. Had it been revealed closer to the beginning I would have found Lara more relatable.

Although Where There's Smoke was an entertaining audiobook that contained a maze of mysteries, there are better books out there, including ones by Sandra Brown. I guess I'll just have to resume my search for the perfect book, because I didn’t find it here.

Loved it

After reading some of the reviews I almost didn't purchase this book. Being a fan of Sandra Brown I knew it would have some redeeming qualities. So happy I decided to buy. Loved the story, characters, plot twists and narrator. Home Sweet Texas!

Disappointed 😞

I am a Sandra Brown fan but this story really let me down. Instead of concentrating on one good story there were too many side stories. It seemed to go on and on so I struggled to finish it. Also, WAY too much sex! I know a romantic mystery has to have its sex scenes which don't bother me but in this story there were 4 different couples that had to have a few sex scenes each. This got really old really quickly, especially when including a couple of randy teenagers! Even Sandra Brown fans should skip this one. If you're looking to try Sandra Brown for the 1st time go for Deadline or Chill Factor (2 of my faves).

I thought the narrator was excellent. Having so many characters to create distinct voices for as well as believable Texas accents was a challenge that Natalie Ross handled well.

Why didn't I just quit listening?

Because my Amazon account was hacked and I couldn't download a new book! This ended up being a bodice buster more than a drama or mystery. I wanted to slap these inane characters in a story that went on and on and on.

Just okay.

This book was not as good as other Sandra Brown books. Better towards the end.
