Publisher's summary

The Dowager Lady Worthington isn't quite sure what to make of country-girl Dorothea Stern. As the granddaughter of the Duke of Bristol, Dotty is schooled in the ways and means of the nobility. But her sharp wit and outspoken nature has everyone in a tizzy. Especially their cousin, Dominic, the Marquis of Merton.

Prematurely stuffy, Dom was raised by his cheerless uncle to be wary of a host of things, including innovation, waltzing, and most perilous of all: true love. Still, there's something about Dotty, beyond her beauty, that Dom cannot resist. But the odds are against him if he intends to win her as his bride. Will he choose loyalty to his family - or risk everything for the one woman he believes is his perfect match?

Good Story

I liked the story but not fond of narration, I speeded up the narration so it was much easier to listen to. But overall liked the story a lot. Drug out a little at the end. But I like this author.

Not a Cheesy Romance Novel

Yes it is a Regency novel but there is nothing cheesy about it. The story is well crafted and the characters well drawn. The Marquis is as dry as the the stick up his rump. He was raised steeped in the belief that he is an aristo and entitled. All was as it was to have been until an unknown woman approached him demanding he listen and hls refusal to release her until he could determine what she was up to. She was only trying to warn him of a pending parsons trap but before she could do it he dragged them both into an unintended trap and she became his afianceed bride. She is also an aristo but from the other wing. She believes that to whom much is given even more is expected. Being an aristo just isn't enough.

There are no spoliers here. Just a lost boy, a couple of kittens, murder, kidnapping and your usual Regency novel fare.

A Good Listen

The story line is interesting and engaging. The narrator has many good voices, though some of the women sound oily when that’s not a fit for the character. I would listen to another book like this!

Good plot & and subplots, but...

I very much enjoyed the story with a few exceptions. So, to not give spoilers, I will just say something didn't make sense. For example, a Marquis so obsessed with title and rank of peer never studied Debrett’s and Burke’s Peerage?
In addition, the sex scenes were cookie-cutter boring. Honestly, if you can't be original or scorching hot, then just leave out the explicit details because it is just nasty, not exciting. I also hate when the virgins are experts in bed...give me a break!
The narration was ok.

Narrator is terrible!

I've only made it 38 minutes into this and I'm returning it and just reading the Kindle book. The narrator is terrible! Choppy elocution due to over-pronunciation of every single syllable so that *everyone* sounds like an old, pompous ass no matter what their age or sex! I gave the story 4 stars only based on on the other reviews but felt I needed to comment on the narration since no one else has given a review on the Audible book...

Liked it very much

Different storylines were woven together with problems developed and solutions provided in an entertaining and believable blend of events and characters. Tension was created by short plot twists that put various characters at risk throughout the book giving the impression of ready action and competent problem solving. Dottie, the lead female, demonstrated profound creative thinking and a “can do” independent attitude. Dottie, committed humanist and egalitarian, encourages Dom by example, to experience the realities of desperation and hardship faced by women and children whose lives are dictated by the elitest society they live in. Dom is able to open his heart and commit himself to changing the status quo through legislation. Unfortunately, although Dom demonstrates kindness and compassion his commitment to change is challenging - he carries the “voice” of his rigid and aristocratic uncle berating him for his liberal attitudes.
The book educates without being preachy giving us a realistic historical view of Britain as gender and societal roles are on the cusp of change.
The downside of the book was the poor to fair narration.

Narrator made the dialogue sound so stilted

I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes due to the narration. I'm returning this one.

When a Marquis Chooses a Bride

This is a very good book, strong heroine and a hero who grows to learn how to love. The author touches on important societal issues giving the book depth. The narrator did an amazing job to bring the story to life.
