Refreshing twist to a dominant male protagonist

This eighteenth century story offers a nice change to the strong male characters we love in mainstream romance. Instead of demanding or expecting this lady to obey, this dominant male trusts and helps this self proclaimed spinster. Together they head out on an adventure and soon discover something in which both are a little reluctant to admit to... love. Stephanie Laurens' has created a sweet, refreshing twist, bringing to life two main characters that not only keep you enthralled throughout this novel, but also initiates an interest in the entire series.

This story is often a little in-depth and descriptive, filled with many paragraphs of protagonist's deciphering through inner emotions. Albeit, this caused the story to slow at times, the pace sat well with Breckenridge and Heather on their revelational exploits to true love. I found the depth this gave the characters enjoyable and all the more rewarding when the liaison and romance fuse together in the end. This may not be a fast paced story line but it still has many amusing, as well as captivating, moments throughout.
Matthew Brenher's deep raspy voice was deliciously lovely to listen to. Although there was something lacking from the narrator during sex scenes that I cannot put my finger on. Maybe a little more emotion would have made for far more exciting listening.

This story leaves you wanting for nothing bar the next novel in the series where you can happily follow the adventures of Heather's sisters. As well as discover the riveting truth behind the abduction.

SYNOPSIS
Finding herself abducted for no apparent reason and being taken to who knows who, Heather's life acquires a little more excitement than she had hoped for. Then when a strapping, handsome man - Breckenridge - comes to her rescue, Heather is determined to get to the bottom of her abduction. The unsuspecting pair are soon traversing down a path of adventure cloaked in danger, self discovery and lust.
Breckenridge - a well known rake - finds the tables turned when he comes to Heather's rescue. His feelings for this bold, strong-minded lady swiftly grows, and this 'rake' is soon considering offering far more then he has ever bestowed any lady.
However, Heather has given up on ever finding her hero, her true love, and has resigned herself to a future overshadowed by spinsterhood. This decision is fueled by her reputation being ruined by the confusing kidnapping. No longer seeking or wanting a favorable marriage, Heather craves a little excitement in her life before she settles into a celibate future.
Breckenridge is happy to fulfill Heather's curious, sexual fantasies, using all his worldly experience to prove himself a worthy lover. While the possessively protective Viscount attempts to keep Heather from the kidnappers grasp, he yearns to build a deeper relationship with this fascinating female he is willing to give everything up for, and marry.
With a pleasant future together taking shape in his mind, Breckenridge has a far harrowing task ahead of him then keeping her safe from her abductors... he has to face his own fears and admit his feelings in order to convince Heather that she should marry him.

Another historical romance that Stephanie Laurence rights. She a very consistent author.

He was pretty mono tone.

Decent but drawn out

Very drawn out but oveall nice. Unrealistic development of love interest, so no surprises there and the usual rolling of the eyes. But still love the aristocratic element, she does it so well. This is an interesting intro to a new cynster story. The laird is soooo sexy! Can't wait to see his story, hope that comes soon

Timothy Danvers meets his Cynster

Date: 1829 February

Chronology: set after Temptation and Surrender; before In Pursuit of Eliza Cynster.

Heather Cynster is the younger sister of Gabriel aka Rupert Cynster who married Alathea Morwellan in April 1820, and Lucifer aka Alasdair Cynster who married Phyllida Tallent in June 1820. Read Gabriel’s story in A Secret Love, and Lucifer’s story in All About Love.
Breckenridge is Timothy Danvers, biological stepson of Caroline Sutcliffe who married Michael Anstruther-Wetherby in The Ideal Bride.
Breckenridge drags Heather out of Lady Hartford’s Soiree only to watch her abduction. He takes immediate action to follow and rescue. Breckenridge ends up offering her marriage to protect her reputation due to her disappearance, and Heather stayed with her abductors as long as possible to find out the who and why of it. They shelter with Richard and Catriona, but you want to strangle or scream at Heather and Breckenridge for their sheer pigheadedness in not admitting to love. Lies, lies, more lies.
Heather receives a necklace from Catriona that is to pass on through Eliza, Angelica, Henrietta and Mary, then back to Lucilla as they each find their love.

Brenher does a decent enough job with narration. I wouldn’t mind if he did female voices better. The credits list Grover Gardner as directing this recording!

Awful Narrator!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The book, possibly. This audiobook, with this narrator, absolutely not!

Would you be willing to try another one of Matthew Brenher???s performances?

No. He does not appear to recognize the difference between a comma and a period. Too many phrases were read as if full sentences. Seems like his focus was on enunciating his words to the exclusion of all else. Slow and plodding and expressionless. I have to say he was just about the worst narrator I have ever heard on Audible. Buy the book instead.

Started out well...

This book started off well. Heather was strong and witty. Breckenridge was hero material. Then once they arrived at the "Vale" it all fell apart. The plot went kaput and all there was was the eternal (and I mean NEVERENDING) "does s/he love me?" question. Add to that the performer did not realize that Richard Cynster was English and therefore should not have a Scottish accent and you have a story that I could not even finish despite having only 4 chapters left. I gave it three because it started off really promising. Laurens needs to fire a copyeditor. Somebody just gave up at the end of the book.

Happy to be among the Cynsters again!!

I've read all of the Stephanie Laurens’ world stories, and I can see how the whole group, Cynster’s, Black Cobra, Bastion Club and Adair's characters are growing, in this first book of the trilogy the strong willed and full of pride is the talent and the obstacle for love, the psychological process of coming to terms is very well described. I wish it didn't have to take a near death experience to see what really matters. I can’t wait for the next two books of the trilogy. I miss Simon Prebble simply because I became attached to those voices and he was very consistent through the different books, but Mathew Brenher did a great job, I don't think Richard (Scandal) should have such a Scottish accent since he is English, but the pacing and intensity was very well performed.

Not the best narrator

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I love the Cynster Series and this book is good.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Matthew Brenher?

Simon Prebble is a much better narrator. He is consistent from book to book. Mattew Brenher has Richard Cynster speaking with an extreme Scottish accent when he is English. Just because he lives in Scotland doesn't mean he should have such an accent.
