Great author if you like Nora Roberts!

I've been looking for another author who can write an interesting story, develop his/her characters and give me a smile on a regular basis without dragging me through some long drawn out mistaken perception and hurt feelings. I think I've found her in Robyn Carr. She has all the qualities I love about Nora Roberts' stories, without the graphic descriptions of the violence that so often seems to anchor a romance story. This story is about a young woman whose husband is tragically murdered causing her to leave LA for a more peaceful place. From the start, you know that Virgin River isn't exactly peaceful, but is full of "characters" in the true sense of the word. Hope, Doc and Preacher are wonderful foils for the main characters Mel and Jack. Sure the romance develops a bit rapidly, but it's a romance novel after all. The love scenes are tasteful while steamy and the relationships delightful. I'm already in to the third book of the series and they just seem to get better. I'm so glad there's more!

Virgin River Rocks

I strenuously disagree with the reviews that condemn Virgin River for being too light, fluffy and sappy (as if dark, depressing and cynical is more entertaining).

In this series, the subjects of domestic abuse, rape, murder, drug abuse, homelessness, infertility, adultery, PTSD and other serious issues have been woven into happier themes of love, marriage, children, friendship and small communities.

Of course, for fun there is a nice mix of tall, dark and sexy (non-violent) men who eventually fall in love with smart, confident and feisty women. So yes, I totally prefer hopeful and inspiring novels over plots featuring brutal violence and human depravity.

I chose this book based on the narrator. I am a big Therese Plummer fan! This book was an excellent listen and left me wanting more. I am on book 5 of the series and it hasn't let me down. Give this a try, you wont regret it!

Nora Roberts Style But Hotter

Nurse practitioner and midwife Melinda is heading to Virgin River for a year. Nine months ago her husband Mark was killed in a botched robbery and she is still reeling. She needs to be somewhere that people don't know her story. But when she gets to Virgin River almost nothing is as it was described especially the cabin. Now she wants nothing more then to leave until she stumbles upon an abandoned baby so she ends up extending her stay in town and both takes care of Chloe, the name she gives the baby, and working for the Doc. When Chloe finds a new home she decides to stay a bit longer as there is a pregnant woman not far from birth. Can retired Marine Jack find some way to get her to change her mind and stay longer. And while faithful to whomever he's currently sharing a bed, he's never found the woman he wants to be together forever with. With Melinda could that finally have changed?
This book has been in my library for a while so I finally took a chance with this one. I'm glad I did as it was very well written. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a good romance.

Therese Plummer was good with the delivery of the story

Light-hearted romance of sorts

The characters are interesting, but I grew bored with the plot about 3/4 of the way through. My general reading interests do not include romance novels. If you're into light-hearted romance novels, this is a great read. Great author and narrator. There are several more books that follow this one in the Virgin River series.

One of the best!

This was a really good book, and the narrator was also excellent! You fall in love with the characters, and the story is well-developed and wonderful. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Like Visiting Old Friends!

This was probably my 4th or 5th time listening to this book in the last 10 years but every so often I feel like I need to visit my old friends. I am normally a contemporary romance/erotica reader but I have to say I love the way this series makes my heart happy.

Jack & Mel are awesome characters, She has a bit more baggage than Jack but they both have their issues. They are like normal people who could live next door to you and I love that. I wish I met more people like them in real life. I really enjoy how we not only get their story but we get some back ground on other characters with future books. For me the best things about this series are that it has all ages and that all the characters are always around so you don't have to say goodbye to them at the end of each book!

The narration for this entire series is FANTASTIC! I love Therese Plummer, she does such an amazing job acting the parts and her male voice is pretty yummy too!

Just the beginning!

I enjoyed this book just enough to go to my favorite used book store to find the rest of the Virgin River series. All I can say is it gets better with each book. This is just the beginning and each story becomes more personal with each character. And they get better and better. I just finished the last one (check out R Carr's webb site for the entire series so far), and when I put it down all I could say was "I want more of Virgin River!"

Start of a good series

Loved this story - the town, people and twists and turns - couldn't stop listening

Good for a rainy day or as part of a busy day

The narrator has done a wonderful job yet again (listened to other booked narrated by TP)

Apart from the twists in the story I wish I could live in a town like this - who wouldn't all the fun and single men !!

hope the rest of the series continues the high standards set by book one

Double treat

When i first listened to this book Robyn Carr is a new author for me as i had never read any of her books, and i loved this book which is the first in the Virgin River Series. She has a fantastic way of telling a story that reals you in from word one, her characters are big and bold and real. The second treat in this find for me was Therese Plummer who just made the experience of listening to her read the book just fantastic!
Cannot wait to purchase the rest of the series!!
Highly recommend to all lovers of a good romance with a twist of suspense and a character driven plot!
