Publisher's summary

Bailey Wingate's scheming adult stepchildren are surprised when their father's will leaves Bailey in control of their fortune, and war ensues. A year later, while flying from Seattle to Denver in a small plane, Bailey nearly dies herself when the engine sputters - and then fails.

Cam Justice, her sexy Texan pilot, manages to crash-land the aircraft. Stranded in the wilderness, and struggling to douse her feelings for the ruggedly handsome man by her side, Bailey begins to wonder whether this was a mere accident.

Sure enough, upon her return to civilization, Bailey's suspicions mount: Who tampered with their plane? Who's trying to reunite Bailey and her husband in the afterlife?

Trusting her life - and heart - to Cam, Bailey must outwit a killer who will stop at nothing to finish the job.

Great survival romance

When I was (much) younger, I did some backpacking in some very remote areas. So I enjoyed this story a lot. The whole "strangers struggling to survive under terrible conditions and falling in love" plot was great fun. And I feel like she did a good job of it. I really enjoyed seeing the heroine figuring out how to make do with what was on hand in order to survive. And I enjoyed the way the two of them worked together, and I liked the way they verbally sparred with one another.

In short, I liked this book. A lot. Try it. I don't think you'll regret it.

More a survival story than a romance.

What did you love best about Up Close and Dangerous?

The characterization was good. Like many of Linda Howard's novels, it gives you a detailed look at the main characters thought process.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are really only two characters through most of the book, Cam and Bailey. I liked them both. They came across as very real. Linda Howard has a knack for putting normal people into unusual situations and letting us watch the outcome.

Have you listened to any of Natalie Ross’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to many of her performances and loved them all. I find she has a nice range and I never catch myself cringing at her male/female voices as sometimes happens with other narrators.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found i had a hard time putting this down. Or turning it off as the case may be. I wanted the drive to last longer so I wouldn't have to pause the book.

Any additional comments?

The romance itself felt rushed. There was a nice twist at the end.

Interesting Story -- Great Narrator!

Up Close and Dangerous is not a predictable story, but a well written story of survival, romance and mystery.

Although fiction, it's very believable, as a person never knows what they are capable of until circumstances necessitate a need for strength beyond what's normal, as in this story.

Natalie Ross gave a wonderful performance.

One of my go to books over and over

Loved the characters, loved the story, loved the romance. Survival aspects we're cool and fun to read as were the flying/pilot aspects but if you're looking for action or suspense this isn't the story, other than the crash itself (which was AWESOME!). Having said that I fell in love with the characters and their drama, and with the different perspectives from the characters it's an engaging read, great story and I love the performance which really seems to capture the emotion of each scene, and the narrator captured the essence of the story so well I can't read the book without hearing her voice now.
Anyways, I listen to it over and over again, so much so I'd call it timeless.

Great survival story!

Mary Ross was an outstanding narrator! This was a different narrative than the usual Linda Howard “romance focused” plot. Two complex and distinctive main characters, trying to survive a plane crash snd fighting to stay alive until rescued. The romance evolved from mutual trust and caring, and in no way overpowered the main story!

Good Story

I liked Cam and Bailey’s story. I really liked that Bailey wasn’t a damsel in distress, she did what needed to be done herself.

Cam and Bailey both came across as real people which I always appreciate. I do wish there was a little more follow up at the end. It kind of felt like the book just ended abruptly.

The narrator did a good job and I enjoyed her performance.

Timeless story, great narration

One of my favorite Linda Howard books, and although published in 2007, the events are still realistic. The best part, though, since I’ve actually read it a few times, is the narrator. Natalie Ross provided one of the best narrations in my extensive audible library.

Excellent page turner

Loved story - good voices except main male character. Too many times voice nuances didn’t match words said

I listened twice.

Proximity-Danger trope novels are among my favorite. I prefer when characters work together for their survival against a brutal environment and the odds (combined w an antagonist or not) rather than having the MCs argue or fight between themselves with mistrust, preventable misunderstandings and/or angst-filled drama (other popular conflict elements). My husband is a GA pilot and we fly frequently. In proximity-danger novels such as this, I find myself asking, “Would I or my husband have thought of that or done that? What would we do to survive?” In this book, the wild elements and cold becomes the antagonist/danger to surpass. The FMC in “Up Close” isn’t stupid or careless either, which increases my enjoyment. I detest simpering, useless damsels. She and Cam work together to succeed. I found the sexual attraction believable and Natalie Ross’s performance was good. I listened twice in a row because this is one of my favorite Howard titles. I own a pb, digital and now the audiobook version. It’s a story I’ll listen to again in the future. When you fly, a crash is always a possibility. I can relate to this very well. (I quizzed my husband on the sabotage aspects).
