Publisher's Summary

Kelsey Byden grew up believing her mother had died when she was three. Now, at 26 and freshly divorced, she receives a letter from her mother explaining that she is alive and living on a Virginia horse farm. Deeply strung by lies told to protect her, Kelsey takes her anger out at her college professor father by going to visit her mother, who Kelsey learns spent over 10 years in prison for murder.

But there are more secrets to be found out, and Kelsey decides to stay at her mother's splendid horse farm where she falls in love with horses and the man next door - handsome gambler Gabe Slater. When murdered men and injured horses turn up, Kelsey finds evil lurking where she least expects it, and risks all to restore her mother's honor.

Critic Reviews

"Roberts paints her story with a broad brush, but its colorful canvas, easily identifiable heroes and villains and swirling action add up to another winner for this popular author." (Publishers Weekly)

A moderately good listen

Any additional comments?

Initially, I thought I'd chosen a dud. It took a little while to get into the story, but it did ultimately engage me and overall, I enjoyed it.

Eh

I generally love Nora Roberts' books, but I couldn't wait for this one to get over. I enjoyed learning about horse racing and their owners, but never really invested in the characters. The narrator used a high pitched 'girly' voice for the main character that was especially grating. I like Nora's strong women-- this one came off as stupid and weak in comparison.

A 6-star listen

Wish I could give this one 6 stars. The story has lots of twists and turns, some sexy stuff, the dialogue between the H/h is smart and funny plus the narration is excellent.

Awesome story

This story was totally riveting. The story flowed, kept you going It was hard to put down when I needed to do other things. The characters were very likable and very real. I felt the love story blossomed in a very realistic manner. My one and only problem with this book was the person reading it. She seem to be very monotone and didn't make a lot of changes in the voices between the characters. At first it was very off putting, however the story was so good that eventually that became a noticeable. Even with the bad reading, I highly recommend this book.

Bad narrator!

Any additional comments?

The story was OK at the beginning, but got boring about 3/4 of the way through. There was too much about the ins and outs of horse racing, but I could have finished the story if it wasn't for the narrator. Not only was her voice annoying, but she kept pronouncing words incorrectly. She kept saying "show-der" instead of shoulder and "so-ger" for soldier. There were other words she got wrong as well, which distracted from the story. I found myself constantly wanting to correct her. I would recommend reading this book yourself, instead of listening to the audiobook.

Great story

Nora Roberts never fails. Its an amazing story. However the narrator was kinda monotone. I'm glad the story kept me because her voice didn't.

too long

I have listed to several other of her books and enjoyed them but this one was way too drawn out. you could get rid of half of it and still get the whole story
