Publisher's summary

Working on highly sensitive diplomatic affairs, Darcy Prescott is a natural target for terrorist kidnappers. But when she's mysteriously plucked off a street in Manila one sultry night, Darcy's disappearance isn't what it seems.

The moment Special Forces soldier Ethan Garrett laid eyes on Darcy, he knew she was the woman he would marry - and he did. But when their marriage fell apart, Ethan never really recovered. Now a highly paid bodyguard, Ethan quickly slips back into combat mode when he learns of Darcy's disappearance and calls in old favors to assemble a rogue rescue team.

Tracking Darcy all the way to the jungles of the Philippines, Ethan knows every move he makes could mean the difference between life and death. His love for Darcy burns stronger than ever. But when he learns the true reason for her abduction, it may be too late to save her - or himself.

What drove me a bit crazy about an overall good story?

1. For me, the flashback scenes in between the present scenes, killed the flow of the story. I think it would have been much better to do two parts - Part I - Before the kidnapping and Part II - Present Time

2. The TSTL moment which lead to the kidnapping - why not have her safely send the evidence, then have her kidnapped at the hotel. Authors need to portray their heroines with more brains - most women think things through.

3. Run away from the person who traveled 1/2 way around the world to rescue you from terrorist enclave because you want to 'keep him safe'? This same man has 3 former Special Forces brothers, a former Secret Service sister and a father who was both special forces and a police officer and now runs a SECURITY COMPANY! Really? TSTL x 1000!

4. He took out a bad guy to rescue her plus he went on covert missions for the Army which are strictly need to know and always classified and she is upset about that? I am former military and know that if he talks to her about the missions, he is subject to arrest. She is State Department and they are held to similar standards. I know that it is meant to be a plot point but, Cindy, please make it about something that isn't classified like he won't share his feelings about his time serving.

5. She asks for a divorce, then takes off. She tells the H that she really did not want a divorce but she wanted him to chase after her. She felt he wasn't communicating with her... WHAT? Communication is a two way street. If something is wrong or you think something is wrong with a relationship, tell that person what is on your mind. The fact that she said she wanted a divorce, then took off closed the door to communication. She blamed him for her wrongdoing. The H wasn't perfect and was closed off but she could have worked with him on the communication issues.

I did enjoy the story and liked the suspense. The way the second h was treated was fantastic and most of the jargon was accurate. Parts, of course, were cheesy as it feeds on stereotypes of strong alpha-male military types but that adds to the fun of the story. I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 due to #3 above.

Always gets it right

Listening to a Cindy Gerard audiobook is literally like watching an action romance movie. The action, twists, turns, the suspenseful and descriptive writing puts me smack dab in the scene. She is excellent. This is the fourth book of hers I’ve read and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all tremendously.

Editing

My issue with this book is the editing. There are skips, not finishing sentencing repeats of partial sentences. It’s frustrating. I have listened to over a hundred books both in this format and on CDs. I seldom run into this problem. It is quite an issue in this book.

Another Idiot!

Darcy (works for the state department) was a idiot. She married Ethan, a bad *ss special forces military man. One night they are attacked & Ethan kills the attacker . Darcy has a problem with this .I suppose she would rather Ethan had let him kill them or maybe shake his hand , pat him on the back and say "nice try, better luck next time". This incident along with Etans' inability to talk about his work (legally he can't) & his wanting her to transfer back to the US for her safety & then his NOT continuing to bug her about the transfer after she asked him to drop it,(in her small brain that means he doesn't care) causes a riff in their marriage. Darcy leaves & informs Ethan, she wants a divorce. Years later a co-worker is killed & Darcy is in trouble so who does she call: ETHAN! Now after she makes the call for help she makes the brilliant decision to go for a walk (instead of staying safe in her room) at night & is kidnapped. Ethan arrives with his crew & has to go rescue the idiot. During the rescue he is injured & could have died & yet when he asks her what is going on she lies & says she doesn't know .REALLY! Etan was a good man. Darcy was childish. The best example of her childishness is her real reason for leaving him. The book overall was good. I just didn't like Darcy. The ending was ridiculous because Ethan basically took the blame for everything that went wrong with their marriage.

A very very slow build

Once it gets going, the action keeps you invested in the story. Unfortunately, the first half of the book is filled with angsty flashbacks so the pace doesn't pick up until you're over halfway through the book.
