Publisher's summary

After Andi Gordon is jilted at the altar, she makes the most impetuous decision of her life - buying one of the famed Three Sisters Queen Anne houses on Blackberry Island. Now the proud-ish owner of the ugly duckling of the trio, she plans to open her own pediatric office on the first floor, just as soon as her hunky contractor completes the work. Andi’s new future may be coming together, but the truth is she’s just as badly in need of a major renovation as her house.

When Deanna Phillips confronts her husband about a suspected affair, she opens up a Pandora’s box of unhappiness. And he claims that she is the problem. The terrible thing is, he’s right. In her quest to be the perfect woman, she’s lost herself, and she’s in danger of losing her entire family if things don’t change.

Next door, artist Boston King thought she and her college sweetheart would be married forever. Their passion for each other has always seemed indestructible. But after tragedy tears them apart, she’s not so sure. Now it’s time for them to move forward, with or without one another.

Thrown together by fate and geography, and bound by the strongest of friendships, these three women will discover what they’re really made of: laughter, tears, love, and all.

Don't expect Fool's Gold

Susan Mallery books are among my favorites reads (listens). But if you're expecting the same tone as the Fool's Gold series you might be disappointed. I really liked the characters in this book (though not in the first book of the series) and was so involved I found myself crying all the time. That's the difference - there is a heavier or more serious tone to this book. Reminded me of Kristan Higgins' books.

Easy to listen to and very enjoyable.

THE SERIES:
This is book 1 in the Blackberry Island Trilogy. Each book can be read as a stand alone. This author has written many romances which are primarily about relationships between men and women. For a change in this series she is writing about relationships between women as friends or sister-like. And I like the change. And I like that at the end of each book, the main female character also has a happy romantic ending with a guy. The main stories are about women, their friends, and choices in life, but secondary stories include their romantic life.

THIS BOOK:
This is about three women who are neighbors: Andi a pediatrician, Boston an artist, and Deanna a wife-mother-homemaker who has OCD and control issues. I loved reading about Deanna who had too many rules and was over-controlling with her children and her husband. She reminded me of my ex-husband.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Natalie Ross was excellent.

Narrative mode: 3rd person.
Genre: womens fiction with romance.

Trama, abuse, betrayal, growth

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Predictable.

What about Natalie Ross’s performance did you like?

She did a good job with different character voices. Would prefer the same narrator in series as the characters come alive. That said there was very little mention and involvement of the characters from the first book in the series so a different reader was ok.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me sad and depressed to hear all the abuse both physical and mental from generation to generation.

WOW rip me open!

This book has it all. From one extreme emotion to the next. Any woman cant help but to identfy with one of the women from this story. I know for me it covers alot of the thoughts that mothers ( esp young mothers) think and are either told not to talk about or feel ashamed that they felt that way. Brings to light that HEY I am not the only one who may feel like this.......
I think it is a must read for any woman in a relationship, trying for a new one, or is just a mother who feels like she has to fix the world for her family and the issues with being the savior so to speak. Dont forget to grab the tissues this book will make you cry and normaly I am not a cryer lol.

Mostly Depressing

This story about 3 women and their families is mostly depressing. Characters have suffered different tragedies ye not sought professional therapy, so everyone else is also suffering. One married woman has 5 kids yet never had a plan for supporting her brood if something happened to her husband. While the characters are sympathetic, they are also martyrs and short-sighted.

Short Read

In my opinion this was lacking more substance, it could have been longer, just the typical story.

Boring. Bland. Predictable.

Halfway through, it was obvious the story was lacking depth and energy. I only continued listening to confirm my assessment.
Narrator’s characters were hard to distinguish from one another and that contributed to a very boring story.

Interesting

Interesting book just not for me I prefer some of her other books more. The Fools Gold series was the best in my opinion.
