Publisher's summary

Thomas Jennings arrives to his newly acquired estate to find that his steward has fled under a cloud of scandal, and the property has been held together by Miss Loris Tanner, the steward's daughter. Thomas knows what it's like to not fit in, and he's pragmatic enough to respect results, so he gives Loris a chance to maintain her position in a profession uniformly undertaken by men.

Thomas learns about the complexities of estate management from his unlikely tutor, despite somebody's attempts to drive him off his own land. Mishaps turn into near tragedies, while between Thomas and Loris, respect and liking grow into attraction. Who is sabotaging Thomas's estate, and what choices will Loris face when the malefactor has been revealed? Contains mature themes.

Adds a whole new layer to the paper book

Bias alert - I'm already a Grace Burrowes fan and this was one of my early purchases in paper. So I questioned buying the audiobook. SO glad I did!

James Langton adds a whole layer of depth to the characters. Picks up the voices I thought the characters might have in my head and makes them totally come alive. Totally loses me in the story so that I'm barely aware of anything else.

This is a repeat listen for me. No stereotypical characters here. Very flawed, very human and very addictive people. I felt like I was immersed in family, watching things play out.

One of the best authors writing enhanced by one of the best narrators out there. So long as Burrowes is writing and Langton is narrating, these are immediate must buys for me.

If you haven't experienced the bliss of listening to (or reading) one of Burrowe's books, you need to. These make you want to listen again and again. They never get old and I always come away feeling like I've spent time with old friends.

did not like

the story was too simple, thus a bit dull. Narrator did not do female voices well.

Pretty good story

I enjoyed this story, though at times I found Lorris a bit tedious for more reasons than one. Thomas and the secondary cast of male lead characters made the book worth finishing.
Prior to reading this, I came across Nicholas in some other books by Burrowes; the books featured his sisters. He’s married and the Earl in those stories. I’ll have to be sure to go back read his story.

Interesting but not an easy read

The story is interesting. The characters are well developed & likable. However, it is not an easy read because you MUST pay attention as there are several jumps to different unrelated scenes, flashbacks, and reflections that are stuck into odd moments. I was confused often and had to replay or just hope things would be explained later.

Additionally, there are many dear friendships, family relationships & romance. The sexy scenes are intelligent, full of desire, but not crude.

The narration is very good, but at times, it is hard to tell if the dialog is internal or actually part of a conversation.

Struggle to finish

I don’t know if it was the narrator or the story but I had a hard time staying attentive and following the story.

Good listen; Loved the main couple

This book is very.good and the characters are well drawn. Being set on a horse farm added a new twist to the plot, especially when fire was introduced to the mixed. Loris from the beginning cried independence and no marriage but I didn’t believe she was serious. She fell for the Baron too fast. Thomas acted from the beginning like he was looking for a wife whether he knew it or not. Timing was just right and the story just moved along. The villains weren’t monsters; just stupid. All told, I wondered if she got the horse they talked about from Giles’ farm. I hope so. That horse needed a loving home with good training.

Fun

A little bit of intrigue and fun. Women’s rights before it’s time. I appreciated the the hero respected as well as “desired” the heroine. I was a bit confused as to all the Baron and land he owned but never visited within this story… perhaps a setting for another book? I was also confused as to all the extra characters…. Other than that I think it came out to a happy conclusion 😊
