Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Erotica, 2014

Book 1 of This Man Trilogy, the number-one New York Times best-selling series!

Young interior designer Ava O'Shea has no idea what awaits her at the Manor. A run-of-the-mill consultation with a stodgy country gent seems likely, but what Ava finds instead is Jesse Ward - a devastatingly handsome, utterly confident, pleasure-seeking playboy who knows no boundaries. Ava doesn't want to be attracted to this man, and yet she can't control the overwhelming desire that he stirs in her. She knows that her heart will never survive him and her instinct is telling her to run, but Jesse is not willing to let her go. He wants her and is determined to have her.

    "Another "Merry-go-round" book"

Someone wrote an earlier review that said "wash, rinse, repeat" and I have to whole heartedly agree with her. I hate bashing any book because a review is only one person's opinion and can infect others' judgements and they may end up loving the book. However, with that being said, this book was definitely not for me. It was far too long and far too merry go round-ish. They fought and got back together far too much for my taste, while never talking about any issues that were bothering them. Thus further perpetuated the cycle and made it a 12hr excruciatingly painful long book. In this romance book lovers opinion, Book 1 of "This Man" is not worth a credit nor any amount of $.

    Story
"Didn't Care For This Hero -- AT ALL"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Judging from the reviews there are a lot of people who enjoyed this book. For me the hero did too many things that seemed straight out of books about what abusers do. There is a very fine line between a hero persuing a heroine who might not be ready for a relationship or who might be afraid of a relationship with him...or afraid of the chemistry with him but this hero seemed to cross that line not once--but again and again and again.

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next listen will be Humbled by Renee Rose

Did Edita Brychta do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She did an okay job differentiating the characters. I expect it would have been a stronger performance had the story had more to offer. The heroine seemed a bit dim in not being able to say no and mean no and call the police if the hero didn't leave her alone. The hero had the problems mentioned above.

What character would you cut from This Man?

I'd suggest reworking the story. There are some stories that really need the hero's point of view...and this seems like one that really did. If some of the story had been told from the hero's point of view then the reader would have had more of a sense of his thought processes and motivations for continuing to pursue the heroine after she said no, not once but two, three, four, five times. Depending upon how this was handled, it could have softened some of the creepy stalkerish vibes coming off the hero.

"Since when is abuse romatic/ sexy..."
What would have made This Man better?

I really wanted to like this book. I was able to get through about half of it before I had to give up out of disgust. The male character, Jesse, was so abusive. The male dominate behavior was ridiculous and over the top. I felt like I was listening to an after school special about abusive relationships. It was impossible to get into the book because I was screaming the whole time about how this woman needed to run! Also, I was baffled by how quickly the female lead, Ava, proclaimed she "fell in love" with Jesse. I swear, she had sex with him twice, said about 10 words to him between each encounter and then all of a sudden was "in love". She came to this determination regardless of his crazy calls, stalking and scary "your mine" crap. It was just not at all something that seemed normal.

Has This Man turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from This Man?

About 1/3 of the sex scenes needed to be replaced with an actual plot and dialogue. I felt like there was no plot, but rather just a series of similar sexual encounters. I bought the book in part for the sex scenes, but there should be some kind of a plot to the book other than having sex every 10 mins. It got to the point where I was thinking, "really, sex again?"

    Any additional comments?

I would not recommend this book. There are some good sex scenes, but they become so frequent that there is little story left. Also, it scares me to think that anyone would find this kind of relationship to be a romance or even acceptable period. Jesse was abusive, controlling and an overall psycho.

    "Great performance. Lacking story."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. I'm one of the Christian Gray recovery victims looking for a fill. This is not it. There wasn't much to the plot, and there was no dimension in the two main characters. He's over the top (as was Christian Gray), but he never gives a reason. Even the inner monologue leaves me unsatisfied. The last 1/8 of the book actually spins up curiosity enough where, sad to say, I invested in the second book just in hopes of getting any answer at all about why Ava and Jesse do the things they do. So far, the second one is much better, but I think it's pretty unfair to basically use a whole book as a means of being a cliffhanger for a second. I'll give it to the publishers for keeping the reader just curious enough to hope the characters have any reason at all behind their actions--it's a smart sales strategy, unfortunately.

What could Jodi Ellen Malpas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

See comments above. Make sense of the characters' actions and have a developed plot.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    I literally don't have one.

Could you see This Man being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No. I can't see anyone finding sympathy or empathy for either main character. Again, the only reason I am listening to the second one is because I am nosy and hate to leave things unfinished. A series definitely wouldn't work, and I wouldn't recommend a film.

    Any additional comments?

I would've named the main character something other than Ava (a la Ana in 50 Shades), and with her being older and more experienced than Ana, I'd liked to have seen her make more sense. Mind you, there were several points in 50 Shades that made me crazy with the decisions Ana made, but they were realistic, based on the depth of character that was clearly painted. In this case Ava accepts a domineering man who really does nothing other than sex her up and send her flowers, with no understanding or communication about why--then her way of rebelling is by making and breaking promises constantly. I don't know these characters, other than the fact that they are physically attracted to each other, which was not established by words or situation, but by a literal electrical jolt between them when they touched the first time. From there, he bosses her around and she hates him for it, but loves him and does it anyway. Then she lies to him, breaks promises---oh yeah, I already said that. That's how the book feels. Ugh.

    "FRUSTRATING !!"

The story appeared to have alot of background, however, after thinking it would be revealed at the next chapter, it never was. It just frustrated me, and Jessie was so (to much) dominating, his secrets were kept for you to wonder "why".....I would not have gone on to book 2 if I hadn't already purchased it.

    Any additional comments?

My eyes must have rolled every 3 mins. Both main characters' personality deficiency, while such flaws are necessary to connect the readers to the characters, was so unreasonably neurotic to the point of ridiculous that made the story unconvincing. Obsessive possessive control freak male can be sexy, and I'm sure that's what the author was going after, but in the case of Jesse, made him plain intolerable. I couldn't muster up a liking for the guy, and his counterpart's tolerance just ridiculous.

What would have made This Man better?

A real PLOT and not so much childish banter.

    Any additional comments?

OMG this was just horrible I tried I mean I really tried and I just could not get into this. There was no real plot and the back and forth between the two were just so childish and annoying. The sexy time was even annoying. Towards the end, you get what the plot was but I was so over the book that I thought ok that was it really. Yeah...... NOT intrigued to move on to the next one. This one goes in the category of not for me for sure!

I definitely would not recommend you use your credit for this!!!
I don't know why I just couldn't connect to the characters in this story; especially after reading the reviews and seeing others enjoyed this book. The narrator did a good job but I kept drifting off and after a couple chapters I changed books.

Would you consider the audio edition of This Man to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the book don't have the time I listen to all my books and really enjoyed it I actually find that I get a lot more out of listening to them, a good narrator can make a book the best or the worst and Edita Brychta was great
Any additional comments?

Just hate waiting for the next one which won't be out till the end of November and not sure if that is just the written version

What made the experience of listening to This Man the most enjoyable?

The narrator makes me really laugh! The voice and the story are reminded me of a feisty and a bit dirty Bridgett Jones.

    Any additional comments?

I loved the whole book series, I can't wait for the rest of the audio books. Please keep the same narrator!
