Publisher's summary

With her newfound faith, Catherine Dougall hopes to take the remnants of her threadbare life and make something beautiful, even if society shuns every choice she makes. Dr. David Ross must save his war hospital from ruin, but when his notorious aunt makes an offer he can't refuse, he must choose between his surprising affection for a reformed flirt or his dreams.

From the beautiful Derbyshire countryside to the trenches of World War One, Catherine and David must learn to trust in a God who never forgets his children and fashions beauty out of the most broken things.

Dramatic WWI Period Romance

I had a little trouble sticking with this story in the beginning, and I'm not sure if that's due to the story itself, the narration, or my personal distraction (which is just as likely.) I grew more invested in the last two-thirds of the story.

Although I haven't yet read the first book it the series, I was able to grasp the characters, their relationships, and back stories fairly quickly.

This book shines in its portrayal of the hero and heroine and their romance, which is chaste yet passionate. The book tends towards melodrama in the last quarter, giving it more of a soap opera-like saga quality, which is just okay for me but which some people might love.

I received a review copy from the narrator. Opinions are my own.

The letters included in novel were especially touching, reminding me that we've lost something as a culture by letting handwritten correspondence fall by the wayside. Worth noting, too, is the memorable line, "God help me, you taste like Christmas." ;-)

I could've benefited from a little more voice distinction among the British accents, particular between males and females. The French and other accents offered clear distinction.
