Publisher's summary

A witch without power meets a vampire lord with a taste for domination....

Emma Krist is the sacrifice.

Emma Krist is a dud - a person from a powerful line of witches with no magic of her own. Not only that, but she's full figured instead of thin, like her gorgeous, talented cousins, and has dishwater brown hair and muddy hazel eyes to match. So she figures there's no way she'll be chosen as the Bloodlust Sacrifice for the new vampire Sovereign. Not that she would want to be - what girl in her right mind would volunteer to be a sex slave for a year, giving up the rights to her own body and sexuality to a dominating male who likes to bite? Not Emma, that's for sure. So when Aiden James calls her out of the crowd, picking her over every other single female in the supernatural community, Emma doesn't know what to think. Now she must begin a whole new life of submission to her new master, giving herself body and soul without reservation...or suffer the punishment for her disobedience.

Kept naked at his strange, mirrored mansion, Emma is teased and tortured nightly, her master denying her release and spanking her at his leisure. As he pushes her body to the limit, she begins to wonder how much more she can take.

But Aiden has reasons for the erotic punishments he inflicts - he knows something Emma does not. Buried deep in her past, is the key which will unlock her hidden potential. Finding it, however, may ruin everything and cost Emma the only chance at happiness she has ever known as...the sacrifice.

Author/characters do not understand D/s

I found this book extremely irritating. I wanted to like it given that the narration was well done given what the narrator had to work with (ie. a heroine narrating the book in first person who was written as very weak and whiny) and the underlining story was intriguing. However, the story and character development were greatly obscured by the volume of erotica.. which I wouldn't have had a problem with if the erotica had been well done but it was repetitive and mislabled. The author seems to have some basic misunderstandings concerning the dynamics of a D/s relationship, almost as if she has read some BDSM books or watched some BDSM videos and picked up some basic ideas of activities and vocabulary but didn't pay any attention to the relationship or the most essential aspects to the relationship (even a short term, single encounter one requires some trust which obviously was completely absent in the relationship between the H and h in this book). Either that or she has observed/participated in an abusive relationship and rationalized it as D/s.

The alleged Dom pretty obviously had no idea what he was doing. He was erratic and betrayed his supposed sub's trust on multiple occasions. She also frequently betrayed his trust and didn't appear to ever really submit to him.. She came across as somebody who a) was a complete idiot (definitely in the "too stupid to live" category... almost literally at one point) and b) has such low self esteem that she was pathetically desperate for any affection or sexual contact from the first reasonably attractive male in the paranormal community. I never got the impression that either really loved the other.

**** spoilers below ***

The alleged Dom's stated reason for punishing his alleged sub at times was for activities that he had explicitly had given her permission to do. He was incredibly inconsistent concerning punishment and reward which explained her confusion concerning what it was supposed to do.

He explicitly took responsibility for preventing the negative consequences of her following an order (to not go to her classes and instead continue them online) after she informed him of how important this was to her, which discouraged her from taking responsibility herself (and dropping the class while there was still time), and then failed to follow through, either not caring enough to remember or considering it important, even knowing that this could have severe negative consequences to her life after the term of their contract (showing, by the way, that the H did not love the h at all since he didn't consider her life outside of her interactions with him to be important)... and then had the nerve to criticize her for disobeying his orders concerning it when he had betrayed her trust on the matter.

On another occasion he directly lied to her to manipulate her into agreeing to something well outside of her known comfort zone, told her to trust him (seriously? when he was obviously, once they arrived at the site, outright lying to her about an important component?), then didn't reward her for multiple activities outside her comfort zone but instead subjected her to severe emotional distancing and disapproval for finally reaching a limit.. something which according to her internal monologue was at least partly due to to his breach of trust in initiating the situation with a lie.

She obviously also lied to him frequently but he never explained to her, a reluctant neophyte sub without any natural submissive tendancies, how this would damage a D/s relationship (if they had actually had one and not just repeatedly tried to tell us they did despite all the evidence to the contrary). She didn't seem to recognize how damaging her basic lack of honesty and openess would be to just any normal relationship. His recognition of and/or punishment of the lies was inconsistent.

Supposedly, several of the things he did or ordered her to do that she found humiliating were to improve her self confidence and body image. However, at the end of the book the author still had the h complaining about her body and saying how much she disliked it.

The H repeatedly accused the h of trying to "top from the bottom"... on several occasions that confused me since it was a completely inappropriate description of what was happening... but at the very end allowed her to blatantly top him from the bottom in how she approached him concerning continuing the relationship (doing it via manipulation rather to avoid telling him how she felt) and didn't even see to recognize that is what she did.

Also, the supposed big payoff on the supposed D/s relationship... and his stated reason for having tried to establish such a relationship... had nothing to do with D/s given she wasn't submitting to her Dom.... instead she was going against the stated wishes of her Dom and following the orders of an outside entity, an instance of forced submission by both the supposed Dom and sub that most people in a relationship probably would have gone along with to avoid being killed without any D/s component, and even when a half hearted attempt was made by the author and Dom to reset the scene in a D/s context it was forcefully rephrased again as both of them having no control by the outside entity intruding and rejecting the scene as set up by the Dom and redirecting it without the supposed Dom's approval.

I surprisingly listened through the whole thing eventually... with many breaks in listening when I became too irritated by the repetitiveness or the attempts to rationalize various aspects of the relationship.. because the underlying storyline concerning the paranormal community was interesting and could have been developed into a very interesting romance or erotic novel. The relationship though just left me feeling disappointed and irritated. Not only was it lacking any true D/s component, the erotica was extremely repetitive and not especially titillating or imaginative, I was also left with the impression that the H and h didn't love each other.. rather the H was using the h as a substitute for his dead lover and as a way to defy the council responsible for her death and that the h would have been just as grateful for attention from any reasonably attractive man.

Fun, hot, easy listen

This audio was a spicy twist on the paranormal community. It was entertaining and hot. The domineering vampire was sexy, brooding, and captivating with the dark history and a chain around his heart that only the virgin witch could break. The sassy witch was strong minded, submissive, and in the end way more powerful than that dud her community thought she was. It was an easy listen with a good amount of domination, heat, and danger. The narrator did a great job.

Sexy Paranormal Story

The Sacrifice was a good paranormal story that was dark, sexy and seductive with the touch of dom/sub. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. There was definitely undeniable chemistry between Emma and Aiden. I thought the ending could have been a little better but I enjoyed the story no less. The narrator did a fantastic job at portraying the characters and their feelings and I would definitely listen to more of this authors work and more books from this narrator.

a little annoying

I always get Evangeline's books and most of her women are pretty much the same strong and curious however this one she was curious and weak and I just didn't care for her whiny. this is not one of my favorite books but I'm so glad I got it because she is my favorite authors the narrator did a great job it is an enjoyable book. definitely still worth a credit if you don't mind a whiny girl. I can't wait until I get the next book

The Sacrifice

Good plot line, but would have been better if there were more of his feelings and thoughts throughout. Also could have used more drama. More intrigue little less sex. Liked it, but must admit she was a little whiny.

Can’t wait for this book to be finished

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better storytelling would have made this better. The words and cunt are used way too much!

Would you ever listen to anything by Evangeline Anderson again?

No. The storyline is dragging on and on. It is boring me. If I didn’t pay for this book, I would not finish it!

Any additional comments?

I actually find the 50 Shades of Grey series better than this book.
