Publisher's summary

Four hundred years in the future, women control the world but Khan Aurelius, ruler of the last free men, is determined to take back the power that has been denied men for centuries. Outnumbered by far, he knows that women need to give up their power willingly and with one of their councilwomen as a hostage, he's certain he can influence her with his superior male intellect. She is just a soft woman, after all.

Councilwoman Pearl has sacrificed herself to save an innocent priestess. Trapped in the Northlands, her soft voice and sugar-coated view of the world doesn't impress Khan, who constantly challenges her by playing his mind games to corrupt her and see things his way.

It's a battle of words and wills when the two intelligent rulers clash. Will Pearl succeed in bringing enlightenment and democracy to the primitive Nmen or will Khan corrupt her with his charm first?

Contains mature themes.

An amazing play on love

I have simply fallen in deep like for this author. You have created a psychological depiction of what it means to be one’s whole self. The words can hardly contain life energy and lessons on growth and unity. I love these strong characters, and the role that they play. “We are the human race,” and we can reach the fullness of our potential without a community in which all are respected and accepted for who they are. You touch on the importance of training the young. You take characters who seem to be polar opposite, and find higher ground in the middle. I am delighted to be on this journey through storytelling with this awesome series. It’s a winner, and will be timeless. I love your narrative and narrators. Great voices!

Loved it!!!

I had it off reading THE RULER, because after reading the first and third book I felt his book would not be good. But I was so very wrong. I loved both H and h . They were great together. Both strong and had their own opinions a d views. It was funny, and a very loving couple that had a romantic and steamy sexy relationship. Recommend highly.

Gosh I love this series so much!

Like the first book, this second novel in the series was excellent. The story of these two rulers was one I was eager to hear and the author does an amazing job at making you want to hear how things turn out for everyone involved. I didn't pay for this or the first book because they were in my romance package, but I'll definitely be paying for the ones that are not because I can easily see that they will be worth it. It felt like there were less sex scenes in this book, or maybe it was just me, but I would've liked a bit more steaminess as well as two new narrators. Hearing the same narrators made it difficult at first to get into the story without thinking of them as Boulder and Christina. Oh well, the narrators still did an awesome job.

Kinda don't know how to feel ...

On this one I kinda don't know how to feel. You get a definite ra.pe vibe the first time they are together. I very much hated that! It did become consensual but, I'm a firm believer no means no & this was written like there is a gray line to that. & I don't agree. It wasn't a playful no either. It was No! & then she just didn't fight back. Then she was like Oh it must of been his first time. Totally a stupid part of the book. Then the relationship became good.
Other than that it was a great continuation of the main plot from book 1(I liked book 1 better). I did like this book & had some good laughs at some of the "crude jokes". I would recommend this series, so far, & I'm on to the next book. I would give the same caution I just gave though.

A lesson for us all

In many ways the story reflects the theories on toxic masculinity many in our society give the impression they wish we had in a funny way. I loved this book.

The Ruler, book 2 in Men of the North

Elin Peer can make the people and places of her imagination come alive. She’s a natural-born story teller. The first time I read one of her books, my husband wanted to know what was making me laugh so hard.
There’s humor, sadness and insight into the human condition. The love that grows between Khan and Pearl is deep and genuine. I enjoyed hearing their story and urge you to experience the pleasure, too. It’s well worth the credit.

This is one of the best books I have read this year. The story line was great and the narration was perfect. This book made you feel as if you were there. I'm gonna binge listen to all the books, just can't put them down.

Pearl and Khan match each other so greatly.

I enjoyed exchanges between Pearl and Khan very much. Pearl is really strong, mature and thoughtful and that was one of many good things about this book. Another good thing is that Khan (and other men as well) was not experienced in a relationship with a woman at all and I find that kind of sweet.
