Publisher's summary

From number-one New York Times best-selling author and USA TODAY best-selling author J. R. Ward, writing as Jessica Bird. The classic tale of a man who always got what he wanted - until he met the one woman he couldn't afford to lose.

Nate Walker has never shied away from the hard road. Even when it meant leaving behind his family's wealth - and the fiancée who only wanted a rich man. Nothing was going to stop him from opening his own five-star restaurant.

And he was on his way, until his car broke down on a dark road in the Adirondacks, leading him right to White Caps Inn - and Frankie Moorehouse.

Suddenly, Nate has a job he doesn't really need and an affair that has to end when summer does. Except Frankie has a way about her. She gets under his skin. She even makes him want to do what he never thought he could: stay forever.

A few caveats before you begin...

In order to give this book a chance, you have to forget the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Next, you have to forget that Jessica Bird and J.R. Ward are one in the same. Then, and only then, does this book stand a chance. Almost impossible for those who love the BDB series, myself included.

"The Rebel" was okay. Good narration by Gayle Hendrix, but the story was uncomfortably slow. If I hadn't used one of my credits, I may not have finished it. On the plus side, I was looking for a light romance, and that's exactly what I got. So, I am very glad that I stuck it out.

Give this one a chance, if you are up for the challenge!

Not what I was expecting.

Would you listen to The Rebel again? Why?

Yes. I really enjoyed listening to The Rebel, because it delivered a terrific story rich with emotion.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rebel?

I can't choose just one memorable moment because there were so many. J.R. Ward weaves the lives of her characters together to create a very intriguing story. Each person has his/her own unique obstacles to overcome. I enjoy hearing it all unfold.

What about Gayle Hendrix’s performance did you like?

Gayle Hendrix's performance is perfect for the mix of characters. The cadence of her voice maintains the pace of the story to effect.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Take the heat, stay in the kitchen. You won't be disappointed.

Not her best

I have read or listened to all of the Brotherhood books and LOVE them, this one seems as if it was written by a totally different person. It is good book but I would have liked more. JHanley

Meh... read this one instead.

The story seemed good enough. It’s a light romance and can appreciate that. I just couldn’t get past the narration. It felt wooden and a bit creepy. Like a geriatric librarian was reading the book. Line for line, with very little inflection in her voice. The male voice sounded more like a little old lady and it was hard to hear his “dirty thoughts” in that voice. I gave up. IL try reading it instead.

Read the book instead

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

After about 5 minutes, I gave up on listening to the book and read it instead. The story was good, but the narrator was pretty bad.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator ruined the book and the "guy" voice was downright creepy

Very different than Brotherhood but

Any additional comments?

If you have read "Brotherhood" series, this book is very different. However I felt the story was really enjoyable, not as much heat and passion as the "Brotherhood" series, but still has much merit. The characters are really well developed and the story is very original. I got this because it was on sale. I really was not disappointed.

Not her best work🤨

Was looking for a steamy romance novel. Not even a warm tingle. Ward needs to stick to what she does best. Narrator seemed to be just reading the book. Spoiled listening to Jim F. Only saving grace is that the book was free on audible.

Difficult not to compare it to BDB.

didn't hate it. I definitely couldn't tell it was written by the same author as the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The writing style seemed different. I can say that if you prefer the fantasy or paranormal romance then this book would be lacking. However if you enjoy a typical romance novel than this would be a good book for you.

Not good

This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

A person not interested in much of a plot.

What was most disappointing about J. R. Ward???s story?

Story line was too basic. It's hard to believe the author of "Black Dagger Brogherhood" wrote this book too. The Black Dagger Brotherhood was great. This book was not.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gayle Hendrix???s performances?

No. She read the book line for line with very little inflection. The characters all spoke like they had not original thought... like repeating what is dictated to them.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Great disappointment
