Publisher's summary

"My name is Amelia Gray. I am the Graveyard Queen, a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. My father passed down four rules to keep me safe, and I've broken every last one. A door has opened and evil wants me back.

"In order to protect myself, I've vowed to return to those rules. But the ghost of a murdered cop needs my help to find his killer. The clues lead me to the dark side of Charleston—where witchcraft, root doctors and black magic still flourish—and back to John Devlin, a haunted police detective I should only love from afar.

"Now I'm faced with a terrible choice: follow the rules or follow my heart."

Sorry... I was bored and my mind started wandering

Amelia is nearly out of her depths in the latest Graveyard Queen story. She's back home in her usual haunts with Devlin's ghosts causing havoc. I find I just don't care much what happens to her and it's kinda same sh.. different book deal until the end of the book when there is a shift in her and Devlin's relationship (hallelujah about time) but it was all too little too late.

Worth my credit? No sorry, it's just not my type of book I'm afraid.

Meh.

I adored the first two books. This one…. not so much. The ending was really great, but the first 7 hours couldn't hold my attention. I read two other books while I was listening to this one.

Deja vu

I'm sorry but havent we been here before?! Ad nauseam? Right off the bat we get Pa's "rules" hammered in "ignore the ghosts" and once AGAIN she ignores them over her own strenuous hopeless objections🙄 Then come the "chills up the spine", hair raising, ice cold breeze, Dezlin makes me jello", blah, blah, blah. He grabs her, she goes stupid, blah blah blah.
It was just too much to go thru AGAIN

Amelia Gray: doormat

Good Lord, woman. Be bold! Shiver. Shake. Shudder. Tingled. Prickles. GAZE. Heart pounding. Stevens uses the same tired phrases over and over across all 3 books thus far. The plot is ok, I stayed with it to find out if Amelia and Devlin ever get to have actual sex. They do. Finally! So many tired clichés. So many repeated phrases.

Lackluster

The narrator carried me through, but the last in this series seems rushed and disjointed. What about Asherfalls? She threw away characters to easily.
Amelia didnt seem herself in this book and not because she was haunted. She became too insecure and repeated things too much.

I sped through this one.

A worthy sequel in a great series with the best narrator

I was surprised at the lukewarm reviews for this third book in her series. I really enjoyed it. I loved it, actually. I thought the supernatural elements were riveting. Better than Book II. For those who say Amelia acts out of character, I do not agree. I think she is evolving in the series as her experiences become more intense. I will say she is a bit more prone to swooning over the man in this one, which is the only thing I didn't love. But otherwise, I would and will recommend it

This narrator is my favorite of all audible books I have experienced. Her character nuances are perfect!

Creepy but good.

Parts of this are down right creepy but it's a good book. Parts of the ending were pretty clearly coming but parts surprised me and that is good. She cleaned up the end but still left lingering questions that would lead you to another book if she'd just write it and I would read it.

Never a quibble with Khristine Hvam's. She always does a great job.

Haunting story, excellent narrator

Cemetery restorer Amelia Gray finds herself spun into a spider’s web upon her return to Charleston, South Carolina. After the physical and mental trauma of her stay in Asher Falls in THE KINGDOM, Amelia’s life is returning to normal when the ghost of murdered cop Robert Fremont asks for her help in finding his killer so that he can move on. Amelia knows better than to acknowledge the dead or interact with them; her father taught her from a young age how to deal with the ghosts they both saw. Now Amelia has broken all four of his rules and finds herself at the mercy of this ghost who can appear as real as any man, at any time of day. Her interactions with him have opened a door for all sorts of evil to come forward.

It is no wonder that Amelia finds herself craving the closeness of Detective John Devlin whom she pushed away when the ghosts of his wife and daughter overwhelmed her. Amelia stumbles across Devlin’s path walking her dog Angus but hides in the shadows. Seeking him out late one night, she goes to his home only to find another visitor already there and overhears a conversation about Grey Dust, a substance used by root doctors to stop the heart so a person can cross over the veil and visit the other side. However, just the mention of its name seems to conjure dark forces. The root doctor Darius Goodwine who brought Grey Dust from Africa just happens to be the cousin of John Devlin’s wife Mariama. As we learn more about the relationships between characters, familial or not, they become tangled and twisted.

Deep in the shadows, Fremont’s ghost oversees Amelia’s efforts to find out what, and who, killed him. Without any training or guidance, Amelia stumbles in her efforts to investigate. She uncovers more than she bargained for and discovers a blackmail scheme, a possible mercy killing, and even a dead body covered in the beetles she dreamt about the night before.

Despite the romantic overtures and spooky circumstances, the first half of the book moved cautiously. It focused on creating the eerie atmosphere that flowed through every page. The prose pricked at our senses with its lush descriptions of scents, sounds, and tastes. We went through raw emotions of fear and dread as the spirits flowed around Amelia. The chemical attraction between Devlin and Amelia was palpable. Yet as the root doctor seemed to have Amelia in his grip and Devlin came to her rescue, the pace quickened and held me tightly in its grip. Unable to fall asleep near the end, I realized I should have just stayed up late and finished the book rather than tossing and turning with that eerie atmosphere pervading my own dreams.

Third in the Graveyard Queen series, THE PROPHET expounds on the story and atmosphere promised in THE RESTORER, answering some questions and posing more. Khristine Hvam added immeasurably to this book with her narration. Her Southern drawl and pacing added the right amount of spookiness to an already haunting story.

This Series!

Talk about star-crossed lovers! Merciful heavens, the madness taking place in this story could give a girl the vapors. Amelia and Devlin just can't seem to get a break even though the passion between them is off the charts. Your heart just hurts for Devlin and what he's been through. In truth, it hurts for Amelia, too. But they get a lot of answers as they go through this present chaos. Maybe there's hope here, after all.

Love these characters. Love this series.
