Publisher's summary

When high-powered fine-art agent Flora Sykes is called in to assess objets d'art in a Paris apartment that has been abandoned since WWII, she is skeptical at first - until she discovers that under decades of dust the treasure trove of paintings is myriad...and priceless. The powerful Vermeil family to whom they belong is eager to learn more and asks Flora to trace the history of each and every painting.

Thrown into their rarified world, Flora soon realizes that there is more to this project than meets the eye, and, as she researches the provenance of their prize Renoir, she uncovers not only a scandal surrounding the painting but also a family secret. The fallout places Flora in the eye of a storm that carries her from London to Vienna to the coast of Provence, but Xavier Vermeil, the brusque scion of the family, is determined to separate her from his family's affairs...in spite of the attraction that propels them together. What secrets is he trying to hide, and what price will Flora pay to uncover the truth?

Art Weird

This is the second book I've read about a forgotten Parisian apartment and although I enjoyed all of the details about art, the art world, and hidden secrets, I found the romance disappointing. Instant romances are tedious to me. I find them so lacking in interest I didn't bother to read the chapter when the lead and her alleged heartsmate got together so that I could get back to the mystery. Lucy Price-Lewis does an excellent job of converting the different characters, French, English, and even American.

Couldn’t stop listening

Amazing! Great story, great narrator. A few slow parts, but the twists and turns and suspense make up for the few slow points

Paris, Art History, Nazi occupation’s...

effect on contemporary lives. I especially enjoyed this modern story which weaves the impact of France’s collaboration with Germany in WWII on one family. It isn’t emotionally grueling as many books on the subject are. The book is mostly about a very wealthy family in Paris and the young woman they hire to assess the provenance to value an apartment full of paintings they’ve inherited.

The narrator does an excellent job weaving between the voices of the characters and their various accents.

Being a student of art history, fashion, a Francophile, and a connoisseur of historical fiction - particularly of WWII - this is among my top three books.

Disappointing

Somehow the different accents didn’t work for me. They seemed artificial or overdone at times. Overall the story was good but I think over dramatized at times. The descriptions of designer outfits were just annoying to me, details that didn’t add to the storyline. At one point I wondered if I was listening to a romance novel rather than a suspenseful drama. An understated style is always more attractive to me so maybe that was just a personal reaction. I would be interested to hear others review this book.

Fun

Nicely narrated, interesting storyline in the art world and World War 2 history. Romantic as well.

Good fluff

A mystery/romance that was well-written fluff. Wealthy people with wealthy-people problems in places wealthy people go. A good romance read with a little mystery thrown in.

Modern Pride and Prejudice

This is modern twist on the classic tale, with a good mystery and lots of name dropping included. Great summer book!
