A not-so-merry widow...

The widowed Marchioness of Folkestone is notorious for her parties, her art collection, and her utter disregard for the rules. But Ellie Claiborne knows her destruction is near. The new marquess is her first lover - the man whose sculpted body and sardonic grin haunt her every time she picks up her paintbrush. If he ever returns to claim his inheritance, her heart won't survive seeing him again.

A man determined to destroy her...

Nicholas Claiborne hasn't stepped foot in England since watching Ellie marry his cousin. He has no use for the gorgeous, heartless girl who betrayed him or the title she abandoned him for. But when his business in India turns deadly, Nick must return to London to uncover a murderer - and take revenge on the woman he couldn't force himself to forget.

A love they can't escape...

Nick hates Ellie's transformation from sweet debutante to jaded seductress. Ellie despises him for leaving her behind. Still, the sparks between them reignite the passion that should have been their destiny. As their demands of each other turn darker and a potential killer closes in, they must decide whether to guard the fragile remnants of their hearts - or find a way to fall in love all over again.

This book should come with a trigger warning.

The narrator and writing style are the only positive attributes of this book. I’ve read all of the books of this series and enjoyed all but this one. I was beyond disturbed/disgusted by this book. You can’t use the word “romance” when the reality is sexual and emotional abuse. I was also irritated that the story presented the disgusting sexual exploitation as the only solution to the heroine‘s debt problem when previous books in the series have explained the extreme wealth of the heroine’s brother, who could have easily paid the debt on her behalf.

Gross plot, honestly pretty creepy.

Seriously the plot makes me cringe. The main male character is creepy. Don’t waste your time even if you liked the rest in this series 🤢

I didn't care for the story

I only listened to this book because the other books in the series were interesting, but I didn't like the sadistic masochistic theme of revenge that was the central theme of this story. I found it very debasing to women this was odd because the other books in this series championed women who aspired to roles above what society expected of them.

A Difficult Story to Review

Let me begin by opining that Emma Powell’s narration was excellent. Top notch. It was the saving grace in listening to this audiobook version of THE MARQUESS WHO LOVED ME.

I haven’t read this novel in print, and I offer that info because there is often a significant difference in how a story might affect a reader versus hearing the story brought to life via narration. Realizations or interpretations can vary greatly because the narration often reveals nuances overlooked in the print version, in how a reader might ‘hear’ the story in one’s own mind. My perplexity in how to review this story comes from 1) the months following the #metoo social movement 2) listening during the time of pandemic 3) abhorrence of degradation due to class, financial or social status, race and/or gender.

There’s nothing about the protagonists which endear them to the listener, though I have enjoyed the female lead since her introduction in book 1. While both characters suffered from loss of love and broken faith, I cannot find any compassion in my heart or mind for our Hero (?) who abases the one woman he (supposedly) loves and has spent years first pining for and then plotting in how to inflict hurt through sexual degradation. This is not a story about BDSM, though it flirts with it. Had the author honestly “gone there,” the interplay wouldn’t have been as disturbing.

Disappointing

I found this so disappointing. I loved the first two books. This is completely different. I enjoyed Ellie in the previous books but she acted completely against her nature in this book.

Nick was an arse! I hated how he acted. It was just disturbing and rude.

I forced myself to finish it. It actually got better with the fireworks. I have something to say about the villain but I can't without it being a spoiler.

I was hoping to learn more about how Amelia and Malcolm were doing other than "they stayed in Scotland."

The narration was quite good; the book's major redeeming factor. I have the next book but after this one I have to reconsider listening to it.

Hated It

Ridiculous! The heroine had to do whatever the hero wanted, for four months for revenge payment, due to him being salty because when she was 19 she married his cousin instead of him.

How could anyone be so cruel

I really hated this one. The cruelty and submission to poor treatment then turns to love. That just made my skin crawl.

Brutal - unless you like abuse

Soooo slow to move past the anger and abuse of a spurned lover. Was really disappointed after enjoying the first two books
