Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013

It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

Despite his decadence and intimidating intelligence, she could see he needed help. Her help. Because suddenly the only thing that made sense to her was the madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie.

    "Madness and Mayhem!"

This was a great story. I wasn't expecting plot twist hot and steamy all throughout the story. This was well worth the credit.

    "I love Ian! "

I greatly enjoy this series but Ian has a special place in my heart.

What I love about the series- the characters are vivid and strong (men and women). I love that they are loyal and passionate and devoted. I love that each has specific interests, strengths, and personalities (this is not a cookie cutter romance).

This book, in particular, is delightful because Ian is so special. The author never actually says that Ian is on the spectrum but it is left to us to understand why he is so intelligent and has "quirks" and I LOVE that he is a hero vs just a side character.

    Just wonderful!

    "Even Better in Audio"

I have read this book in the past but listening to it really adds to the story. The characters of Beth and Ian are so perfect for each other - she can see beyond his "madness" to the man beneath.
This is the perfect first book for this series because in a way, Ian is the brother who keeps all the others together.

"Thoroughly enjoyable classic erotic love story"

I really, really enjoyed his story. The female protagonist is likeable, funny, a good historical look at Victorian times. The mystery is pretty good, but never overwhelming on the plot, it always felt fun. The one thing that bugged me the entire time was that the main male character very clearly has autism and is on the spectrum. I know they didn’t know this in the 1800s, but the thoughts and issues he described were straight out of an Austin diagnosis description. I thought his character was handled well when coupled with the “madness” or autism, but every time they described how he was feeling I was just screaming “autism” in my head. All in all, I liked the narration and storyline and it was well worth a listen.

    "Love is ....."

This is only my second time listening to this audiobook. I love, Love Ian Mackenzie and the way the entire family stand together to face all adversities. The portrayal, depth and growth of the characters are so real. Beth is a very strong and influential female lead, despite her own share of human weaknesses. The narrator Angela Dawes did an outstanding job. Each character had a distinctive voice that help to enhance their varied role and status. This will not be my last revisit to this Audio, but for now, I will visit with another Mackenzie family member. Anyone who loves stories with a strong sense of family, determination to overcome hardship, with a touch of mystery for added intrigue, will enjoy this historical romance.

    "Just not my book"

I love Highlander books but this time period must not my time period. the book wasn't bad and the narration was ok..it just didn't hold my interest. I usually listen to a 9 hour book in less than 2 days but I think this one has been 4..5.. just kind of glad to be done with it.

    "wonderfully funny and romantic"

This was one of the best 18th century loves stories I have read. It was witty, emotional connecting and intelligent. I cannot wait to hear more about this family.

"I really wanted to love this book... "

There were a very good twists but overall this book fell a little flat. The performance was very monotone which made it difficult to keep my interest. Perhaps, had I read it myself I would have enjoyed it more.

    "Trying too hard"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I'm just completely over the brute who can't love meets independent woman who fixes him trope. Lets be more creative. This is E.L. James' bag and has been done, redone, and redone again.

What could Jennifer Ashley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She had some really clever lines in there, so clearly she's a talented writer. I just want to see more of that.

    Any additional comments?

If you're going to do a mystery make it more compelling. Not some sidebar that suddenly takes center stage. There was no real build up and then all of a sudden it's the entire plot-line.
