Publisher's summary

Lady Lydia Bedford-Browne's small rebellion becomes the adventure of her life when her coach crashes and leaves her stranded on the treacherous Dartmoor moorlands with the only other passenger: a rugged, disarmingly attractive Texan named Sam Cody. Sam's slow, melodic drawl and dark, hypnotic eyes tempt Lydia in ways she never thought possible. But dare a British lord's daughter loosen her proper English restraints any further?

Foul luck has caused the dashing American millionaire Sam Cody to miss his own wedding to an unforgiving bride...for the second time! Worse still, he's stuck in the middle of nowhere with a straight-laced noble beauty. But there is an unmistakable spark of courage, sensuality, and wild passion beneath Liddy's prim exterior, daring Sam to pursue even further what his heart and his soul now desperately desire - even though both the Texan's and the lady's vastly different worlds will be rocked if they dare surrender to...indiscretion.

Judith Ivory's lush, lyrical romances have won multiple RITA awards and are highly praised by authors, including Amanda Quick.

Well-written Regency romance

I have to confess, I love Judith Ivory books, she is (IMHO) one of the best authors in the genre. In fact, I read this book in paper a few years back, so got it as an Audible book as I knew it would be a sure-thing (well-written, interesting characters). Sadly, I have to admit this is probably the weakest of the Ivory books I have read (check out Beast and Sleeping Beauty for the best), but that said, a medicore Ivory book still rises to the top of the historical romance titles.

The story is a little slow to start, and towards the end there is a "misunderstanding" to move the plot along (I find such devices overused in the genre, but Ivory handles it well). If you are looking for a well-written Regency romance, with a few touches of humour, and some memorable characters, then you cannot go wrong here.

And the narrator does well -- our hero is an American, and heroine a British aristrocrat. She keeps the accents straight, and adds to the telling of the story.

Overall - 4.5 stars.

Addicting

This is one of the best romances I have listened to.
It is Nobility meets a Cowboy at its finest.

The narrator is one of the best I have heard, (even though you can hear her making strange noises, maybe swallowing?) Her changing from a southern drawl to an english accent is effortless, and accurate, and before you know it, you are hooked.

I do not normally leave reviews, but felt I needed to, I wanted to make sure there was another 5 stars added.

Aural Joy!

Judith Ivory‘s Victorian era "lady and the cowboy" story would have been a light, enjoyable read on it’s own, but the narrator, Barbara Rosenblatt, breathed life into Liddy and Sam. She narrated the book in a non descript American accent, then gave Liddy an upper class British accent that was somehow filled with humor, vulnerability, and playfulness. And the fact that a woman was doing Sam’s voice was lost to me in seconds because his mumbly Texas drawl WAS Sam. I think I smiled through most of this audio book. What a JOY this was to listen to!

What is that sound?!

This book might not have been half bad if one could concentrate long enough to listen to the story, instead all you can hear is the god awful sound of the narrator swirling her saliva around in her mouth for the majority of the book.

Very entertaining and well done.

I really liked this audio book although I've never read/listened to anything by this author. The reader is excellent and did a great job with Sam's and Lydia's characters. I usually don't think female readers do well voicing male characters, but this reader was right on the mark. My highest compliment is that I've already listened to it a second time and just love the story and the reading. Definitely a keeper and I love that it's Unabridged. Keep them coming, audible!

STUPID

THIS BOOK WAS SO NUMBING THAT I COULDN'T POSSIBLY TELL YOU IN THE ALOTED SPACE. I HATE THE THOUGHT THAT I HAD TO GIVE IT EVEN ONE STAR. THE ONLY REASON THAT I KEPT LISTENING IS BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT COULDN'T GET WORSE. THIS AUDIO WAS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

a Texan in England a 100 years ago ...

The story and and particularly some of the dialogues are not the best or original ones. It simply is a romantic novel set in good old England. Who cares whether the details are correct or if such thing could ever have happened? The leading male character makes up all these flaws. He is everything a romantic woman dreams of and something you only find in a book. Don't expect too much and you'll enjoy the book. Good narration.

Great entertainment

If you really want some hours of entertainment without much thinking this is a great book for it. I enjoyed it very very much.
Great narrator's voice too. Only in between sentences there is a strange noise, just if she is doing something with her tongue in her mouth. A bit distracted.
