Publisher's summary

After making a fatal mistake on the job, Lina Zuendel seeks shelter in a Seattle assisted-living facility as their live-in nurse. But peace is not what she finds. She soon hears tales of ghosts haunting the house, and of two tragic deaths that took place in the 1930s. Unexplained events send her to ask questions of the handsome resident houseboy.

Ren Schultz, a seemingly young live-in houseboy, tries to avoid his growing attraction to the new nurse. His secrets are too dangerous to share, no matter how lonely he has become. But Lina is persistent, and soon uncovers dark truths that no one else has dared to face.

As their attraction grows, so does the intensity of the paranormal activity. Can their love survive the mysteries that lurk in the old sorority house?

A Lovely Romance

I love the characters in this. I felt really invested in seeing how things would play out between Lana and Ren and was always looking forward to their next moment together (a sign of a great love story! If I'd had a psychical copy I would have been hard pressed not to look ahead to read all the highlights between them! An urge I constantly have to struggle with when reading a romance I'm really enjoying).

The author does a great job of writing likable, believable characters and does great job at adding the right dash of humor to it. The reader also does a fantastic job.

If you enjoy charming and gentle romances, you should give The Ghost Downstairs a chance.

Jealous Ghosts

After having administered an accidental but fatal drug to a patient at the hospital where she worked a young woman takes a job at an old folks residence - a residence haunted by the ghosts of a young man and a young woman who died tragically.
An interesting story that's part romance and part mystery with a healthy dose of classic horror. The romantic leads are charming,, sympathetic and vulnerable and the supporting cast of plucky old folks makes the for a story that is sweet and a lot of fun.
Well worth your time.

Ghost story about forgiveness and second chances

This is basically a sweet, romantic ghost story about forgiveness and second chances. I remember reading this book when it was first published and really enjoying it at the time. Now, more than a decade later, I decided to listen to the audiobook, and I was less enchanted.

Partly I think it’s because, even though the characters are older, the story has a new adult feel (without so much sex). The main character, Lina, irritated me with some of her reactions and choices. She seemed very juvenile for a supposedly 32-year-old nurse. I liked Ren well enough, but we don’t get his point of view. The secondary characters were fun and added some laughs.

Melanie Carey did ok with narration. She’s easy to understand and offers distinct character voices, but I found her pacing and emphasis a bit off for this story. I occasionally had some trouble following the story, and for me, I think this works better as written material than as an audiobook. I’d recommend listening to the sample to judge how you’ll react to the narration.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author and volunteered to provide an honest review.

Something different

I didn’t care for the female character or the narration. Narration was choppy and robotic. Amplified the impersonal disconnect for the female character. Story was good otherwise. It was definitely different from anything I’ve heard before.

Great Ghost Story

Appropriate story to listen to at Halloween. Characters were enjoyable, even the nasty ghost, and story line did not get bogged down. Scary parts were scary and romantic parts were romantic. Weakest part was narrator.
