Firstborns rule society. Secondborns are the property of the government. Thirdborns are not tolerated. Long live the Fates Republic. On Transition Day, the second child in every family is taken by the government and forced into servitude. Roselle St. Sismode's eighteenth birthday arrives with harsh realizations: she's to become a soldier for the Fate of Swords military arm of the Republic during the bloodiest rebellion in history, and her elite firstborn mother is happy to see her go.
Tenley "Ten" Lockwood is an average 17-year-old girl...who has spent the past 13 months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers but her refusal to let her parents choose where she'll live - after she dies. There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

Twenty-two-year-old Ivy Morgan isn't your average college student. She, and others like her, know that humans aren't the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun... and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. Four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she'd sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart. Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He's six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm.
No doubt about it, Sebastian "Oz" Osborne is the university's most celebrated student athlete - and possibly the biggest douchebag. A walking, talking cliché, he has a filthy mouth, a fantastic body, and doesn't give a sh-t about what you or anyone else thinks. Jameson Clarke may be the university's most diligent student - but she is no prude. Spending most of her time in the hallowed halls of the library, James is wary of pervs, jocks, and douchebags - and Oz Osborne is all three. She's smart, sarcastic - and not what he expected....
Lissianna has been spending her centuries pining for Mr. Right, not just a quick snack, and this sexy guy she finds in her bed looks like he might be a candidate. But there's another, more pressing issue: her tendency to faint at the sight of blood . . . an especially annoying quirk for a vampire. Of course it doesn't hurt that this man has a delicious-looking neck. What kind of cold-blooded vampire woman could resist a bite of that?
New intrigues, adventures, and stunning revelations fill the penultimate installment of #1 New York Times best-selling author Kresley Cole's electrifying Arcana Chronicles.
In a world teetering on the edge....
When Evie receives life-changing - and possibly game-changing - news, she has trouble believing it. Why doesn't she feel any different? Is it possible someone she trusts might be lying?
With enemies at every turn....
Tensions seethe inside the castle of lost time as Evie starts to doubt her own sanity. Answers can be found outside their stronghold, but will Death help her find them - or prevent her from learning the truth about her future and Jack's possible survival?
Darkness beckons.
A mysterious, sinister power begins to affect the Arcana in its path. Forced out into the wasteland alone, Evie must depend on unexpected allies. But as a battle with Richter looms, can her new alliance defeat the Dark Calling before hell reigns on earth?
I love this series, as well as the others, even though this is a lot less "spicy".
even though the ending is left wide open, it's sad to see one of the guys leave.
So curious about the fool, can't wait to read more...

Any additional comments?
I loved this installment! As always, sad that it ends and I can't continue everyday listening to Evie's story. I am Team Death and loved that Arik was so much a part of this book and we got to watch him develop and change. A must listen!

I am so emotionally invested in these characters and have been for years. I squee from happy and sob from heartbreak. I am one part impatient for the next book to get here and one part dread that it will be over.
Team Aric ♡

I hate that I'm into book 6 and Evie is worse than ever. I've never rooted for the main character to be killed off before, but she is beyond selfish and difficult to listen to and so, I wish her dead. The idea of the series started out good and I was hoping her character would grow up some, but she just gets worse.
There are many good love triangles out there but Evie is "in love" with whomever is in front of her at the moment protecting her. She is so weak minded that she can't see obvious threats (the cups) and when she finally lets the Red Witch take over she is baffled by the destruction. You give a moron a bomb and they can still cause destruction.
She is absolutely a horrible character. Weak, selfish, manipulative beyond measure and she knows it. Her brand of crazy makes it hard to enjoy the rest of the halfway decent characters. So, death to the Empress! The world would be a WAY better place without her.
I can't stand it any longer and will not purchase another book.

Spoiler...
I liked the series and finished the book in a day but enough with the love triangle already. Evie flip flopping between the two guys make her very unlikable. It almost felt like she was looking for and hanging on to excuses not to be with death. Can you really blame the guy for flipping his switch after millennia of betrayal? She kept feeling bad for dragging Jack into the whole arcana mess. Then leave the poor guy be and maybe he’ll find love again later down the road. Death on the other hand can’t be with another woman besides Evie. Even though it is a hard choice, it is a rather clear choice I think. Evie should grow up, stay loyal to death, give birth to this baby that could potentially end the game and provide Jack with a reborn/nice world to live in.

Normally love triangles annoy me. But the bonds between all three of them is very endering. I love this series. can't wait 4 the next book!

I’m not sure what direction this series is taking concerning the love interest but I think Evie should just marry both and they all live happily ever after. So hard to pick which one I want her to be with, but I will always love Jack the most. I am a bit tired of the love triangle and wish it would come to an end. The first couple hours were a bit of a struggle to get back into the story, but it does pick up and I couldn’t put it down after that. I should have relistened to the first books, it took me a bit to remember where I was in the story. I was surprised who ended up being the Hangman card. I also look forward to seeing what the minor cards are up too. Narration was excellent, I really like her accent for Jack.

Amaaaaazing series and each book just gets better and better!
Kresley Cole is my all time favourite author and this series is brilliant. Could not put it down, love the characters the believable and enviable love triangle and utterly unique story based on Tarot cards as actual people, so clever, so fresh, so entertaining!
Genius!
Enjoyed the story greatly. Appreciated the note from the Author at the end to signal that the end is coming, and it does feel like it’s gearing up well for that. The torn romance is very poignant and the “ash” remains a terrifying place. Good characters who I’m interested in following. Although was very sad about the death of one of the characters in this book. Great series and great individual book. Can’t wait for the next one!
Can't wait to see how it all plays out and who wins the game in the end
Along with all her other books, K C knows how to keep you enthralled from the first chapter
