Publisher's summary

Sophie Scaife almost ran away once, trading her ticket to college for a ticket to Tokyo. But a delayed flight and a hot one-night stand with a stranger changed her mind, putting her firmly on track to a coveted position at a New York fashion magazine.

When the irresistible stranger from that one incredible night turns out to be her new boss - billionaire and publishing magnate Neil Elwood - Sophie can't resist the chance to rekindle the spark between them...and the opportunity to explore her submissive side with the most dominant man she's ever known.

Neil is the only man who has ever understood Sophie's need to submit in the bedroom and the only man who has ever satisfied those desires. When their scorching, no-strings-attached sexual relationship becomes something more, Sophie must choose between her career and heart...or risk losing them both.

The book was great but I can’t believe they ended like that! Left you wondering

Love the book, but narration was disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Unfortunately, I couldn't finish listening to this book. It's a shame because the print version which I've read a few times over is one of my favorite books in the genre.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Boss?

Pretty much all of it. (sorry if that's not helpful) But The Boss has blown me away with the intense emotions and very heavy situations the characters fight their way through. This is the case for all later books in the series as well.

What didn’t you like about C. J. Bloom’s performance?

I really wanted to like C. J.'s performance, but her tone in virtually every chapter I made it through was abrasive, almost frantic. While Sophie isn't supposed to be a very mellow character, the intensity of the narration failed to fit the context in many scenes. It really broke my heart that such a sexy, moving book had to be ruined by the narration. If only it had been Andi Arndt instead...

Was The Boss worth the listening time?

If you can get past the narration, this is DEFINITELY a story worth your time. Personally I'd suggest going with the print version of the book, since there's no distracting narrator. This is a series with a really incredible story, so I think it's really worth anyone's reading time. Maybe just not the audio version.

Any additional comments?

I was made aware of this post by a twitter post from Mara Wilson, the actress who played Matilda in the 1996 movie. She expressed her belief that people should be reading this as an alternative to Fifty Shades of Grey. I completely agree. The emotional turmoil is still there, but this book doesn't include the psychological abuse that characterizes Christian Grey. Neil is an amazing character, and I have nothing but love for him. His struggles over the series are profound, but his bond with Sophie helps him pull through in the most heartwarming way possible.

Worst male voice

I tried to get through this book but the voice of Neal was horrible instead of an English Male voice it sounded like an old woman who smoked too much!

good story

I was not impressed with a female narrator trying to mimic a British male. A male narrator for the male would have made the story flow.

Couldn't finish it...

Too many things I couldn't handle about the book. Their age difference was a turn off for me, maybe because I'd not be inclined to want a man 20+ years my senior, at least not as my sexual fantasy. Then the BDSM got too rough for me when she wanted him to hit her with a belt and be spanked very hard. Then he begins talking about his experience as a sub to a bad dom, a male dom! Done. Obviously this wasn't the book for me, though many others seemed to love it. To each their own. Wish it had been a little more clear in the description. Still shaking it off...ugh!

What can I say???

This book starts off one of the best series I've ever read. I'm six credits in to this series and it has been so worth it. Great story with excellent narration.

Ending

The book is good, but it is not at all a stand alone book! Wish I had known that before starting to read.

sometimes over at the top

this is my second time reading the story, but the first time listening to the narration. The drama can sometimes be over the top, but I like how mature the characters can be.
