A Different Fantasy

Surprisingly compelling for a second book in a trillogy, Spells of Old did not disappoint.

My personal guess as to why this book holds up so well on its own and as an installment in a series is the author's break from traditional narrative convention. This is not a traditional fantasy story in anything but the (possible over) use of traditional fantasy words. The most compelling character is a nigh-unstoppable not-quite deity, and she's the central figure of the tale through this book as well. She is just doing her own thing, and it's interesting to see how and why she takes steps to build up her power base and harem.

In trying to spell it out, this is almost the reverse of a traditional fantasy tale. Almost all the supporting cast is on fairly standard fantasy adventures, even the badguy building up his evil empire, but our not-goddess is just doing her own thing. It's obvious to the audience that she will eventually but heads with others but it's hard to imagine how she'd be stopped, or even really slowed, and we're just along for the ride like the rest of the cast, watching her build power and do crazy powerful stuff for herself and those she cares about. How does she react to all the little people in her shadow, and how do they react now that she's starting to make waves?

It's not a book one reads to empathize with a main character. This is a book and series for cheering on a superwoman as the word crashes into her, and admiring the mythology revealed in the prices left over.

can't wait for the next book.

This is by far one my favorite book series. I've never felt like writing reviews or looking up the date of when the next book would be available before this reading these books.

Sigh, Filler, lots of not imporant Filler

So basically anything interesting is only from the main characters. Any non-main character isn't worth reading the chapter. There are TONS of chapters from not the dungeons perspective that are just not worth listening to. Nobody cares what the other people are doing. Nobody cares because it is BORING. This isn't even a full book here, just filler. It could have been shrunk to 4 hours worth of listening, maybe less. Sorry, not worth reading. "Spoiler" I will tell you what happens in the book in a few words now so you can see what I mean. The dungeon saves up mana and created a city for her lover to rule. Other people do other things that don't affect this. Books ends with slaves escaping to this new city called Beacon. Side stuff that doesn't really matter: The stolen god is almost corrupt. That's it. Nothing else of import happens. Told you the important things in two sentences. You can read my review and prob read the third book and not have skipped a beat in the actual important story.

Wow can i say that i loved every single moment of this. The first book had me intrigued but this one made me drool at every aspect. The narrator fits the book beautifully and the writing paints the picture perfectly.

Author did good

he also has done a great job with the details how to keep the story lining and clear and precise way of projecting what each characters doing the storyline is fit and overall how he keeps all these stories in his head alive and conducting in a way that rivals in my opinion JRR Tolkien. but listening to it gave me a better ideal and understanding of how he writes and I like the fact that he is confidently writing about a story of about elves

Even better than book one

I really enjoyed book one of this series, but book two was great. I wasn't bored once, and am looking forward to purchasing book three just as soon as funds allow.

i think its a great book but

i think some of the sections could have been longer or better explained like more could have been added to the necromancy section.

a good giggle.

it's a fun story. the writing is ok. alittle lacking in places. detail mostly. the environment could be richer. but the story is good and I'm eager for the third installment. a good holiday read.
