Publisher's summary

Someone was after her and it was my duty to stop them. Never cross the line. That had always been my rule. But that was before Race True. The moment I saw her, I wanted her. But there was a problem. She wasn't just another pretty face - no, she was my first client at ALFA PI. My take-what-I-want attitude shouldn't include her, but how the hell can I be expected to keep my hands off? The danger that followed her had my protective instincts in overdrive. And as the clock ticked down, the choice was laid out before me: save her career or risk everything and have her in my bed. Could I put aside my wants for her needs? Or would my selfishness destroy everything in the process? Warning: If you can't handle a dirty-mouthed bad boy or a tough woman with an attitude, this might not be the book for you.

This story was a surprise to me. It is very erotic and explicit. The Mystery / Suspence is more of a reason for the two to meet and continue the association.

Some good traits but fell short

There were a lot of things I liked about this novel; the family interactions, good sex scenes and good basic idea, for the plot. However, I did not get pulled into the story. I didn’t feel anxious during the kidnapping, search and rescue, for example. I didn’t share the emotional trauma with the Heroine or the uncertainty of the Hero. It wasn’t awful, and perhaps I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. I am going to try the next book in the series, though.

Pretty good

3/5 stars. Book 1 in series but spinoff of Men of Inked series.

The plot of bodyguard/detective is familiar. Some scenes/reactions are unlikely or unbelievable. The characters are interesting.

The erotic scenes are hot.

The narration is pretty good.

Alright story but not quite my style...

3 stars

This was a good story. I liked Morgan and Race alright...the story was fine but there were things I had issues with. This is the first story I've read by this author and there's something about the writing that just wasn't for me. I might try another of her books in the future but that's unsure because I'm not sure I'm into her writing style.

Race is a female executive at a big firm. She's had to be a bitch to get where she is at work and keep her position. Race lost her father when she was still young and her mother wasn't very supportive growing up. Race had a boyfriend in college that cheated on her and it made her swear off any love interests.

Morgan is fresh out of 8 years in the Army, specializing in surveillance and supervision. When he gets home, it's to a smothering mother and old friends that are no good and will just get him in trouble. Morgan goes to a family wedding in Florida and ends up getting a position with his cousin's PI firm.

Morgan moves to Florida and his first case is a blackmail case. The client is a business woman that's being blackmailed and her career (which she's worked hard to get ahead in) is threatened. Race called ALFA's PI to work on her case and hopefully find out who's threatening her. When Morgan and Race meet, she tries to put on a cold front like she uses so much at work but she's flustered by Morgan. The attraction is definitely mutual but Morgan isn't happy he feels such a strong attraction to his first client. He's a bit worried for his job but after he can't keep Race off his mind for days at a time, Morgan decides to explore more with her.

As he and Race get to know each other, Morgan works on her case but it's not made easy by Race's disinterest in sharing her personal details with him. Despite her attempts to be standoffish, Race can't help but be drawn in by Morgan and be too flustered to hold onto her attitude. Morgan is a rather take charge guy and tends to ignore/enjoy her attitude so it works out well. The case doesn't go quite as well. They figure it out and all but there are delays that cause some danger to Race that really could have been avoided. But with that hurdle taken care of, Race and Morgan are able to (with a little help) start their HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story overall. Race was a decent heroine but she did sometimes seem to be obstinate just for the sake of it, even if it was to her own detriment. Morgan was a good hero. I'm not sure what it was about the writing that I didn't quite get into but although I thought the characters and story were alright it just wasn't quite the right vibe/feel for me. I guess this author's writing style just isn't for me but others might like it better.

* note - There were 2 narrators, a female for the parts from Race's PoV and a male for the parts from Morgan's PoV. Both did fine but Race's narration did bother me a bit. Race was born and raised in the city in Florida and from what I've heard (and experienced), the people that live in cities in Florida don't typically have the southern accent. The female narrator portrayed Race's voice with a heavy southern accent (that to me sounded more Louisiana than Georgia/Florida) and the male narrator didn't give Race an accent...so it bothered me a bit.

Great story

Loved the story! This is part of the authors' "Men of Ink" world and should be read before the last book 7 of that series. If you enjoy reading books in order, look up Chelle's reading order. I did not, and it was a huge spoiler for this series.
The only downside for me was Samantha's accents being a bit off.,. especially Race's, who should not really have had a southern accent, being from Tampa. I usually enjoy her narration, but this really bugged my brain and skewed the author's characterization of Race in my head.

Eh

It was okay but I’m not into more sex scenes than a story. If there had been less it probably would have kept my interest even though I tried to forward through the sex.

Terrible Female Narration

If I wouldn’t have used a credit on this I would have stopped listening after the first chapter of the female narrator’s “southern accent”. It was so bad it was distracting!!
