Publisher's summary

Suffering from a cruel heartbreak, Lord Philip Hamilton has been driven to seek refuge from the painful memories haunting London, and his father's Jamaican sugar cane plantation provides just the escape he needs. Philip finds solace in his hard work and takes comfort in the fact that his distance from society ensures that his heart will be protected from future entanglements. Protected, that is, until the unexpected appearance of a mysterious woman with no memory of her past. The only clue to her identity is a necklace inscribed with a name: Anna. In a matter of weeks, this gentle, intelligent, and impossibly beautiful stranger turns Philip's world upside down. But as the bond between the pair grows, the threat of Philip losing his heart once more is only the beginning of the dangers that await. Island renegades and a ruthless band of pirates clash in a swashbuckling battle, and it soon becomes clear that these villains may be the key to unlocking Anna's past....

MY TAKE
This was a very sweet love story that touched on some difficult subjects, including slavery and the abuses that went with that. I really liked both Philip and Anna, and I enjoyed seeing their love story take place.

I wondered, with all the concerns about propriety, that no one questioned that Anna was staying in the home of a bachelor with a minimal staff. Philip also seemed to have no problem with Anna's status as a servant when he finally found out who she was. I'd have liked to have seen him at least wonder about that.

Otherwise a delightful read.

A lovely romance with an exciting twist

I really enjoyed this clean romance. It was interesting and well researched. The story never lagged or slowed it was always engaging and heart felt. I really appreciated the author's note at the end explaining her portrayal of slavery and the call to help victims of human trafficking right now.

TRITE STORY

This story was just okay. It was so predictible and trite. There was nothing unexpected in the story. The thing that irritates me most about this book and other books by Covenant, is the way the authors portray their main characters as emotionally stunted, and not able to use their minds to think about the situation. There were several instances where "she was so frightened that she could not think straight"......... what? That's just stupid! No one is that dumb! It wasn't only the female lead either, the male lead also had moments like that. I've read many books about the men and women of that era, and they were NOT stupid. Many were very studious and learned, and especially used their minds to figure things out. But Covenant authors continually portray their main characters as emotional idiots. For example, once Anna gets her memory back and realizes that she was a servant, she thinks that Philip is going to be snooty, class conscious, and turn his back on her - even though throughout most of the story she sees what a compassionate, UN-snooty, UN-class conscious, UN-prejudice person he is! How dumb can she be??!! I like well written, humorous, romances with excitement and intelligence, such as Georgette Heyer's stories. Have good authors like her disappeared?
