Publisher's Summary

Love! Julia Croft never thought she would actually fall in love with the man she set out to mislead. Surely he would forgive her if he knew the truth. Could he be so cold-hearted as to not see what her brother meant to her? Would he see that it was a matter of life and death that brought her to this deceitfulness?

Deceived! How could Caleb Armstrong, have allowed himself to be drawn into being enticed by a woman who merely used him? Now that he knew her ruse, he could easily rid himself of Julia Croft and her brother Miles. Surely there was a woman somewhere who could overlook his gimp leg. The most plaguing problem would be - could his heart ever forget her?

    "Just wonderful"

With Barbara Goss' stories I always take a moment to reflect at the end and see what lesson she was writing about.
In this book I think it is that the truth will out and when it does, it may hurt some people but it will probably do more good than not and also that it is preferable not to be conniving nor to lie. If you need help, then ask for it.
But these are my own thoughts and opinions on this story and yours may differ.
As usual Barbara has written a lovely story about two different, yet connected pairs of people who meet and fall in love. Their lives are interwoven and shadowed by the lies and deceit of a brother and sister. Only when these lies are brought to light and faced head-on can these two couples learn to trust again.
Tom Jordan has a 'voice' I for one could easily fall in love with. Jokes aside, it is a beautiful one and he uses it to the full to enhance this book. Just wonderful!
The audiobook version was provided by the author at no cost and this is my honest and unbiased review.

    "The story continues!"

This book wastes no time right out of the gate, resuming where the previous book left off; convenient if one recently finished the first book as I had, but probably abrupt for those who took some time off in between. The result is a book that doesn't have the extra burden of character and plot introduction, or an introduction, which adds up to some weight loss and a run time of a hair over 3.5 hours.

In this book, I felt there was no wasted time, and the pace was just right. Once again, Tom delivers a great performance, and it seems that everything is even more settled into place.

Initially, in the story where the deception is in the open and quickly apparent to the listener/reader, I found myself disappointed and wasn't sure I would enjoy this book nearly as much as the first. I stuck through it, and things conveniently resolved themselves and led to a happy ending, as you'd expect. There wasn't nearly the length and depth of anguish for Caleb as there was for Jonas, and for me this may have taken away from the impact of the book. It would have been all too convenient, however, for Caleb to magically find happiness and give both himself and Jonas the chance to enjoy their wealth which their father instructed to keep a secret until they were both married. Caleb was halfway down the mail-order bride Avenue at a few points, but predictably, that didn't pan out.

I'd be interested in knowing how many of these books there are in the series, and how far reaching the shadows will reach, I know there are more coming. I just hope they don't over-reach and lose all the special sauce of the first book. I've been told the books get even better, so I'll gladly stay tuned. I drive long distances for work and these books are burned through in no time.

I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

"a passionate and exciting sequel to the first book"

I thoroughly enjoyed Shadow of Deceit. The book was a passionate and exciting sequel to the first book of the series, poetically delivered by the narrator, Tom Jordan. Another great book to follow in the footsteps of the first. I’ll be looking forward to the next one.

    "Good historical Western romance"
Would you consider the audio edition of Shadow of Deceit to be better than the print version?

    Not sure

What about Tom Jordan’s performance did you like?

He has a very dynamic, clear voice. Every sentence is clear and easily understood.

    Any additional comments?

I would like to listen to more in this series.

"A wonderful story and terrific narration."

This is the second book I've listened to by Barbara and they just keep getting better, which isn't easy, considering how good Shadow of Shame is. The story is fun to listen to and clean, but not preachy. Such a warm, wonderful tale of love, honesty, temptation, and honor.

Tom Jordan's narration was terrific. His voice is smooth, and his characterizations are spot-on, consistent, and fun to listen to. Can't wait to hear more from him.

Grab a copy of this. I listened to Shadow of Shame first, but it's not necessary - just recommended because it's such a good book too.

    "Another Great Western Romance"

Caleb Armstrong was injured in a farm accident and now walks with a limp. Despite his handsome face, he's convinced that no woman would want to marry a crippled man. He was left an inheritance by an aunt, but hides his wealth to avoid attracting women who would only marry him for his money. Desperately lonely, he considers sending away for a mail order bride.

Julia Croft arrives in town, and to Caleb's surprise she actually flirts with him. She wants to spend time with him, and Caleb finally dares to hope that he's found a woman to love him despite his limp. But Julia has an ulterior motive that may damage any chance at a relationship between them.

This is the second book in the Shadow series, but can be read as a standalone story with no cliffhanger. Caleb was one of my favorite characters in Shadow of Shame and it was great to see him get his happy ending. There were several possible love interests introduced for Caleb so it kept me guessing, but in the end he was paired up with his perfect match.

Barbara Goss weaves a Christian message into each of her novels, but it's never heavy handed. The theme in this story was forgiveness. It's always a pleasure to read her real life application of the theme.

The narrator did a great job, he has a deep voice that's pleasant to listen to. He reads at a good pace and manages the speaking voices well. I received a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

    "Another Beautiful Story"

I got this ARC via audiobook boom. This si another good story in this series. I love the fact that Julia and Caleb were able to find their HEA. Julia started out with deceit but ended with amnesia and then a recovery of her memories. Caleb and Violet discovered that a forgiving heart reaps much reward. I loved the way the story went down several roads before coming to the end. Great writing and narration.

    "Sweet and Clean"

Barbara Goss writes sweet and clean romances that have a christian theme. This particular story was a second chance at love for Julia and Caleb. They had to overcome trust issues and learn the meaning of forgive and forget. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. Typically I do not listen to many christian themed books, but I have found an author whom I enjoy and I will take the time to listen to her books. I never feel blah after listening to her books with their hidden messages. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook by the author, publisher, and/or narrator. Speaking of the narrator, Tom Jordan did a very good job with this performance.

    "Sweet historical story"

Caleb was gored by a bull and walks with a limp & is self conscious about it. He works at his family's lumber yard and is loves to do woodwork. An all around 'nice guy' who no one really sees because of his injury.
Julia is beautiful. She moves to town & is staying with her brother. She finds out that Caleb is wealthy and starts paying attention to him.
Caleb is enamored by Julia and considers giving love a chance. What will happen when he finds out that Julia has been using him? Let's just say there IS an HEA!
This was a quick listen and great story of forgiveness and acceptance.
