Publisher's Summary

In financial straits and on a sure path to spinsterhood, Venetia Milton thought her stay at the remote, ramshackle Arcane House, far from society's prying eyes, would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engineer her own ravishment. She was there to photograph the relics and artifacts collected by a highly secretive organization, founded two centuries earlier by an eccentric alchemist. And the alchemist's descendant - her employer, Mr. Gabriel Jones - had the eyes of a sorcerer....

After a night to remember, Venetia is prepared to cherish the memories of her romantic encounter and move on, but she is shattered when, shortly after their night together, she reads of Jones's death in the papers. As a private tribute to her one-time lover, she adopts the name "Mrs. Jones" and the guise of a respectable widow, and embarks on a new career as a fashionable photographer in London, where her unique ability to "see" beyond her subjects and capture that quality in her photography makes her photographs highly prized.

But her romantic whim causes unexpected trouble. For one thing, Mr. Jones is about to stride, living and breathing, back into her life. And the bonds that tie them together include more than just the memory of passion; Venetia's special "double vision" has caught the attention of someone Mr. Jones is tracking - someone who will go to any lengths, even murder, to possess an ancient, extraordinary secret that has been lost for centuries. Someone who believes that as the "wife" of Mr. Jones, Venetia is the key.

Now, as she introduces Gabriel about town as her miraculously back-from-the-dead "husband," Venetia must join him in a perilous quest to track down a dangerous opponent who manages to stay one step ahead. As they explore the darker, wilder underbelly of the modern, scientific Victorian world, they must see through society's illusions - or this time, Gabriel Jones may not be coming from the dead, and neither may Mrs. Jo...

    "Great storyline, too!!"

Yes, Amanda Quick gives us a few really steamy scenes, but what impressed me most was the storyline. (You could almost cut out the steamy parts, but they are really fun!)

I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that the characters are well-written, the heroine is a strong individual (not just waiting to be rescued), the period details are great, and there is a real puzzle/mystery to keep you guessing.

As for the narrator, Anne Flosnick has a delightful voice. She is able to do men's voices quite well, and her vocal variety for all the characters seems to me to be spot on.

    Enjoy!!

    "Entertaining and intriguing"

This story was fun. The story moves along at a nice pace, the characters are well developed, and the plot is interesting. I found the narrator did a very good job creating a voice that lent an "image" to each character. I was a little disappointed at the start, thinking she had erred with one character, but as the story unfolded I found she had used precisely the right voice. I'll be listening to the subsequent titles in this group, and if they are similar to this one, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

    "An Arcane adventure!"

I enjoyed this story. I listened to it on audio and it was highly entertaining. The romance between Venetia Milton and Gabriel Jones is charming and the story very original. I am a sucker for a Victorian Era spinster that is outspoken and strong willed. That is why I am a Amanda Quick fan. She never disappoints me and her heroines always end up with dreamy men.

    "Suspenseful; good romance; well-read"

This series was recommended to me by a friend, based on my enjoyment of other supernatural romance series. (The fact that this particular book in the series is also a period romance is just icing on the cake for me, personally.) I found the characters and story-lines to be interesting and suspenseful, and as another reviewer wrote, the heroine is of the headstrong, independent variety that contributes to an interesting story (even if you occasionally sigh at her bull-headed-ness). The male lead character speaks in an intelligent, witty manner and has all the desirable traits of the hero of a romance novel. The narrator is excellent; you can distinguish which character is which, and she handles men's voices as well as she does those of female characters. I enjoyed this first Arcane Society novel so much that I plan to begin reading the next in the series as soon as possible.

    "Narration makes escape impossible"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

An engaging enough historical romance (first in the Arcane Society series) if it had been read by someone more talented. Minimal character development would have been an acceptable trade for the racy sex, but to have someone who sounds like my 8th grade catholic school principal (Sister Dorothy) read what is supposed to be red hot lovemaking is not my cup of tea. I tried to cope by imagining the words on the page, and then reading them again to myself, to no avail. Skip this one and buy the book. I'll be buying or borrowing the next in the series, because they're fun sexy 'thrillers' -- but the narration here makes escape impossible. Want something comparable (though less racy), but extremely well-read and compelling? Try one of these two historical romance/detective series: Amanda Peabody mysteries or Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia series. Excellent character development, plot and compelling romances, read by first rate narrators.

"Not too bad but definitely worth a 4 star"

I love books that talk about special powers an abilities and so it's only natural that I liked this book immediately. I found it clever and the storyline was suspenseful a bit as well. So if you are in the mood for a historical romanced do consider this one. Again, keep in mind that this is a 4 and not a 5 star. So if in the mood for a 5 star, get a Laura Kinsale book instead.

    "Meh"

This was a big fat "meh". I have read other books by this author in her various pseudonyms, but has to be the bottom of her barrel. I don't mind the fact that it was predictable and formulaic...all her books follow the same basic steps. But this one was incredibly boring. People spent so much time talking about boring stupid things that the reader (or listener) already figured out. Venetia and her family spent a good 10 to 15 minutes considering what to do when her "husband" showed up and she assumed he was a blackmailer. I respect the fact that the author wants to establish that she is an intelligent and self possessed woman, but ^@%@# we already know who it is!!! Stop harping on it! This is just one example of many super boring scenes you will sign up for if you get this book. I'm not saying you won't like it, but I didn't. I also didn't like the narrator very much.

"Yawn.... A novel, not a romance."

Boring. Couldn't finish it, in spite of the great narration. Should be listed as a novel, not a romance.

    What's up Amanda??

"Not impressed with the reader :0("

I am listening to this now and struggling. Everytime the reader transitions her voice to say "Venetia said..." or "Gabrielle said..." etc, I am so completely annoyed. It is distracting from the story. Nonetheless, I am going to finish listening and give it a chance since I wanted to read this series for a while now. If book 2 is similiar I will give up the quest and move on to another series.
