Publisher's summary

A sweeping historical romance about a witch who foresees her own murder - and the one boy who can help change her future.

Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island's whalers safe at sea, but her mother has forced her into a magic-free world of proper manners and respectability. When Avery dreams she's to be murdered, she knows time is running out to unlock her magic and save herself.

Avery finds an unexpected ally in a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane - a sailor with magic of his own, who moves Avery in ways she never expected. Becoming a witch might stop her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers her magic requires a sacrifice she never prepared for.

Riveting story, but so sad!

This is a great listen. It’s a compelling story and Lauren Fortgang is just THE BEST audiobook narrator. But it’s a sad ending and takes a while to wind all the way down. I’m glad I listened, but am a bit depressed now.

Breathtaking

A beautiful story of love, loss, and destiny. Can't wait for her next book to release. The characters and story were well written. Would read it all over again.

Not for me

One of my pet peeves is arguments that happen over and over again - without change in understanding or attempts to see the other person's view or insight into another character. In my opinion, this book is just one long argument between mother and daughter with nothing changing until the last two chapters. The story has an interesting premise, women who are born to be witches on Prince Island. And I kept hoping it would get better. But halfway through I sped up the narration just to get to the end. This book was not for me.
