Publisher's summary

Dr. Tala Matapang thought the most challenging part about getting kidnapped by slavers from another planet would be escaping, not butting heads with the obstinate Star Guardian captain who rescued her. She’s been working in his sick bay, and it's refreshing not having to deal with the politics and bureaucracy she faced as a surgeon back home, but Captain Sagitta is as infuriating as he is handsome. He's got this crazy plan to take her and the other women home against his government's wishes, and he didn't even consult them about it first.

Captain "Sage" Sagitta of Dethocoles believes in doing the right thing. That's why he's defying his government to take Tala and the other Earth women home. Unfortunately, he has a couple of problems. First, his government is sending a surprisingly aggressive pursuit after them. Second, he’s having a hard time imagining dropping Tala off and never seeing her again. She’s a capable doctor and is doing an excellent job heading up his sick bay. More than that, he’s attracted to her and is starting to care about her. Too bad he’s better at barking orders than sharing feelings, and he seems to argue with her every time they speak.

With trouble stalking the ship from behind and obstacles blocking the route ahead, Sage and Tala will have to form a bond and learn to work together, or neither of them will see their home worlds again.

Great book. Like all the rest in the series.

I love this series of books. They are all amazing. Once the story gets started it’s hard to put it down. The characters are great and well developed and the book is fun and sexy from begging to end.

Cliffhanger?

This has been an excellent series but I have to warn you at the end of this book they have not gotten out of their current predicament. That means I’ll have to listen to the next book, to find out what happens. It’s worth it.

What if two Spocks courted each other?

To be fair, a feistier narrator might have made the dialogue work better (or maybe duet narration).
Ms. Leheny is great for straight to business, military sci-fi (take her narration for In Fury Born), but she doesn’t do as well with campy humor or the shy, wry humor of two introverts, which is what Captain Sagitta and Dr. Tala Matapang both are. Yep, these are two peas in a robot pod, two sticks in the mud, two awkward control freaks who both lean in at the same time and can’t read signals worth a darn.

The humor, action, and nooky are all pretty sparse in this installment. Further, the series arc barely moves the needle from the last book’s ending with the decision to take the gals back to Earth.
Worth the sale purchase, but I’d be miffed if I’d blown a full credit.

For space opera romance, I instead recommend three series that also provide good value because the first few are offered in collections: Dark Planet Warriors (for better action and heat), Barbarians of the Sand Planet (maximum camp and nooky), or Eon Warriors (alpha romance, cheesy 80s movie action and evil alien bugs… grab the popcorn).
