On the day she awoke remembering nothing but her name, Kahlan Amnell became the most dangerous woman alive. For everyone else, that was the day that the world began to end.

As her husband, Richard, desperately searches for his beloved, whom only he remembers, he knows that if she doesn't soon discover who she really is, she will unwittingly become the instrument that will unleash annihilation. But Kahlan learns that if she ever were to unlock the truth of her lost identity, then evil itself would finally possess her, body and soul.

If she is to survive in a murky world of deception and betrayal, where life is not only cheap but fleeting, Kahlan must find out why she is such a central figure in the war-torn world swirling around her. What she uncovers are secrets darker than she could ever have imagined.

When Will it End?

Would you try another book from Terry Goodkind and/or Sam Tsoutsouvas?

I'll end up finishing this series, but listening to Phantom feels like I'm just drudging through it to get to see how it all ends.

Would you ever listen to anything by Terry Goodkind again?

As I said, I do want to see how it all ends - I've invested a couple of hundred hours listening to this series.

What three words best describe Sam Tsoutsouvas’s performance?

Average.

Could you see Phantom being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

They tried with this series and when you read TG's remarks about it, you can tell he wasn't thrilled with it.

Any additional comments?

Okay, so I've really enjoyed this series. Really, really enjoyed it. This end trilogy, though, is turning out to be so tiresome. Throughout the books, the characters have been a vehicle for TG to put forth his ideas about free will and the rights of the individual and a story of the atrocities of unchecked evil and how one must fight back against it. So far, this second book of the trilogy is pretty disappointing. There are HOURS where characters are retelling to someone a list of the goriest things TG could think of which go on and on to the point where one is just wishing whichever character was being told would just say, "Look. I get it. They're a bunch of ruthless savages. Geez. Move on, already." There is at least one LONG, LONG, LONG lecture - like an entire chapter - where a poor, ignorant character is enlightened about the evils of faith - any faith - and how those who have faith love to kill those who don't believe as they do. Not to mention, those who have faith are ignorant, stupid, illogical, blind, sheep-like, intolerant, egotistical, condescending, uncharitable, judgmental, misled fools who hate everyone around them and despise life itself. Believe it or not, that's not an exaggeration. The book is SO repetitive and wordy. Where TG could use 10 words, he uses 100. It reminds me of Jordan's Wheel of Time series where there were passages that lasted for 200 pages where literally nothing happened. It's like the author was told, "Okay. We want to end this with a trilogy. I don't care how short that story is, fluff it up to 800 pages so we can divide it into three books." It's like what Peter Jackson did with the Hobbit, but preachy. All in all, I've truly loved this series. It's so disappointing that this one book has turned it into a grind.

Not a bad story, but way too long and repetitive

What can I say, I really should have read the other reviews and taken a bit more notice. I read the preceding books in the series when they were first released, and I must say and advantage to printed books is that you can skip the bits that are repetitive and dull. I think that the three final books in this series could easily have been compressed into a single story.

Although I have memories of the early books being very good, the final "trilogy" set have been something of a disappointment. The characters are dreadfully one-dimensional, and Richard himself has become unbelievable, overly righteous and at times downright dull. And was it just me, or were all the "bad" characters fat and/or ugly brutes, and the "good" characters slim and attractive intellectuals? Please!

I also found the switch in narrators disconcerting - the narrator who did the first book was better, but by then I was sucked into the "but I just need to see how it ends" trap.

Phantom Review

Finally finished reading Phantom. This book was the dullest of the series, it seemed like TG dragged it out too long, especially with Kahlan's storyline. Now off to finish the series with Confessor. Hopefully this one will be as good as the beginning of the series.

Narrator

The story is great. However, Jim Bond is a much better narrator in this series. This book was narrated by Sam Tsoutsouvasand and is extremely monotone and flat in comparison. It was very hard to follow some of the dialog in the story without more variations in the voices.

better

I was some what dissappointed with Chainfire, part 1, but this book was a lot better. My only wish is that the narrator would stay the same. I really dont care who, although Jim Bond would be preference, but when you are use to one person, a change in the characters voices can throw you off.

Wish I could give it a 0 out of 5

getting increasingly violent, but I just want to see how the series ends at this point.

Good but...

I always get unabridged versions of my books, however, if ever there was a time for an abridged version the Chainfire Trilogy is it!!! OMG....some sections just go on and on! Don't get me wrong I love these books but why 3 books were needed for the Chainfire piece, I have no idea!! Whew...I'm glad I'm finally done with them!!!

Very Good Multi-Book Sci-Fi Fantasy MUST HAVE

What made the experience of listening to Phantom the most enjoyable?

This is the 10th Book out of the 11+ book Story of the Seeker which is a great Story which is an Addictive Original Story. If you like Sci-Fi Fantansy with Magic and the like; This series is a MUST HAVE starting with The Wizard's First Rule, The Sword of Truth. There is a TV series of which both are good.
Terry Goodkind is a great writer with original writing, he may be a little long winded but is well worth every penny and or credit.

I like these type of books and always have but this is one of my favorite of all-time. I am 40 years of age and Love Jim Butcher's Dresden File, Love Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles and this ranks right up there with them.

I totally Recomend All of Terry Goodkind's Books, I think Book 2 or 3 is the one where the narrarator messed up the names and pronounced everything wrong and made a mess out the Audio book but it was still a good story, Thank goodness they corrected this mistake on the next book.
This is a must have to any self respecting Sci-Fi Fantasy Reader/Listener.
Terry Goodkind is a master story teller!

What other book might you compare Phantom to and why?

There is no comparison!

What does Sam Tsoutsouvas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is a Very Good Narrarator in which a bad one can screw the whole thing up. No problem with this guy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and Almost did!

Any additional comments?

Mr. Goodkind is a bit long winded but kicks butt with a Great Story and characters you learn to Love.

Dear Spirits!

OK, with hands fisted at my sides I'm going to finish this series, heehee! Anyway, this is not really a bad book but I'm getting to think this author has a real problem with women and I will be happy to be done with all the violence against them. Other than that, we're moving toward the end I think... some good, some not so much but all in all I have to say I have been entertained. I liked this reader too, he's from the very frst book I think.

Thrilling second book in the chainfire trilogy

Would you listen to Phantom again? Why?

As it is a part of a trilogy inside the The Sword of Truth series it would be perfect to listen to again when you revisit the series.

What did you like best about this story?

The entire backdrop of this trilogy is very exciting, there is alot of revisiting of characters from previous books. It keeps true to the main story line, the quest for unity, peace and freedom. Also the ever evolving journy of Richard Rahl. This book especially deals with alot of the questions you have from book one, but it still keeps you on the edge of your seat. You just want to hurry up and finish it so you can start on book three and the conclusion to this series.

Did Sam Tsoutsouvas do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

He does not have the same broad specter of dialects and tones to differentiate different characters. Previous narrators have done a better job. But the main problem of a series this long is that it is near to impossible to keep the same narrator for the entire series. I have heard Zed's voice in alot of different ways so far, and you can not really get a feel for a character just based on its voice in The Sword of Truth Series. That being said I must say I enjoy Sam's deep voice, it is very pleasant and the small changes he does for the different characters is enough to know the difference, I feel now in book 3 that I can start to distinguish the difference on characters based on his twist on them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could I would! I sneak in as much time as possible during my day to listen to books, and this one was very captivating indeed!

Any additional comments?

If I could chose a narrator I would go for Nick Poedehl, his performance of Kingkiller Chronicles day 1 is SUPERB!
