Publisher's summary

A piercing scream filled the mountain air freezing Dusty and Mike in their tracks. Spurring their horses into a full gallop, they headed straight for the trapper cabin at Sheep Lake. Dusty could only pray they weren't too late! Set in the modern day mountains of Washington State, Dusty Rose and his sidekick, Mike Dracopoulos, ride and pack their horses in the high country. Living in Eagleclaw, a small town on the outskirts of Seattle, Dusty has a law practice and Mike is his private investigator. With a bad divorce under his belt, he feels like he's pretty much got life figured out - until meeting the beautiful Cassie Martin in a Seattle courtroom and then high up on a trail in the Cascade Mountains. Cassie is a fiercely independent horsewoman and attorney. Dusty is drawn to her and isn't sure why, until their trails cross again in the middle of the Pasayten Wilderness. Cassie's quick thinking and courage come into play in a deadly confrontation and Dusty finds himself rethinking staying single all his life. What starts out as a summer visit to his uncle's outfit turns into a life and death struggle for survival in the high country. The mountains are a jealous mistress and, although many come to enjoy the bounty, not all are allowed to leave.

A very enjoyable book for those rainy dreary days

Where does Pack Saddles & Gunpowder rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

in the top 10

What other book might you compare Pack Saddles & Gunpowder to and why?

as a genre think of a modern western

What does Richard Rieman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is amazing in his inflection. Man,women or child through teen. Amazingly good

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes... I did it in two LOL

Any additional comments?

This book takes place in Washington State. As a Washingtonian and hiker this was a great delight. The story revolves around a cast of interesting characters in the outdoors of Washington. A couple lawyers, a private eye , an old miner , a Microsoft employee and family primarily and of course a couple very bad guys

What makes it an unusual book is it's very equestrian centered and names trails and locations that are popular. The author is obviously well versed in the outdoors distances between locations , etc. I am one of those that will use google and look at distances and terrains , etc. I can't stand books that have people do the impossible such as hike or ride hundreds of miles in a day. Some will check like me.

The detailed descriptions of locations I noted. Some i will visit this summer the author painted such a great picture in my mind I must see it LOL

The characters were all very likable. The detail spent defining each was a big plus. I need a back story about who and why the characters are the way they are and believe as they do. It helps me relate to them and invest empathy

The storyline was quite good. It could have been a bit tighter with a few loose ends and thoughts of after listening what was this character or event in the story ? But they were few and did not distract. I understood it was to set the mood.

I liked this book very much. Having worked on a ranch summers as a teen the fans of trail riding and hiking will live the detail and descriptions and accuracy. There is mild violence, romance and very well developed characters which made it so very enjoyable to listen. Thumbs up on this one

I was given this book to review and the thoughts are my honest feelings post listening.

Western thriller romance?

A piercing scream filled the mountain air freezing Dusty and Mike in their tracks. Spurring their horses into a full gallop, they headed straight for the trapper cabin at Sheep Lake. Dusty could only pray they weren't too late! It's a Western thriller romance set in the modern day mountains of Washington State.
This is the information that had me asking to review this book, well maybe the romance comes in the next part.
It took me several tries to get through this, it started slowly
About half way through it picked up abit.

Amazing

This book has blown me away. The story line is captivating, and through the narrators words you are effectively placed within the adventure, following the characters along through the mountains. Everything you love about camping, horses, and the great outdoors is beautifully captured by the author. 10/10 would recommend!

Loved the details

I liked how the story went into such good detail about going out in the back country with horses. It was a sad story, but hopefully it will actually make people aware there are dangers out there!
