Publisher's summary

Love is a curse.

Three hundred years ago, Warin lost his humanity.

The night he met Thea was the night he lost his soul.

For more than 200 years, Warin has roamed the wilds with only his blood brother, Aleric, for company, terrorizing villages and feeding on human life. Sating his dark hunger was all he ever cared for...until she crossed his path.

From the moment he meets his beautiful Thea, her emerald eyes and tender heart call to him like a siren's song. But she is human, and unless Warin can uncover the truth of their connection, he'll never be able to possess her the way he so desperately desires.

Enlisting the help of the Ancients of his kind always comes with a cost. Especially when Thea is revealed for what she really is: either a gift from the gods...or a curse on his bloodline.

Origin is a prequel novella to the Ancient Blood series. Although I only deal in happily ever after, we haven't reached the end of our tale yet, so make sure you pick up book one - Wicked Soul!

Be careful what you wish for

I wasn’t sure what to expect of the story when I began the book. I was immediately pulled in by Warin and his brother and his love, Thea. The machinations and jealousy surprised me. I don’t listen to many vampire books, so I wasn’t familiar with ancients or the concept of them. I thought the story moved along well, but it is a novella, so it’s only part. I was impressed by David Brenin with his awesome performance of the characters with their distinctive voices. Nora Ash is a very talented author. I would love to binge listen to all of the books in this series at once to get the full effect of all the characters and what happens over the span of time. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. Kudos to Nora for the twist at the end.

Enjoyable Story

I really enjoyed this story when I originally read it. It was still enjoyable as an audio book and David Brenton did a good job. Unfortunately I just did not picture Mr. Brenin’s voice as the voice for Warin.

Good Setup

I enjoyed the story. It definitely left me looking forward to the rest of the series! I feel so sorry for Warren and his lost and forgotten Thea!

The narrator makes Warin sound hot and dangerous

I loved this story when I read it on my Kindle, and it’s just as good on Audible. The story itself is fantastic—sexy, full of action and surprising emotion. To be honest, even though it’s a prologue, it’s my favorite book in this series so far. I love how rough-edged Warin and Aleric are.

Listening to it like this really highlights Warin’s struggle to understand Thea and her humanity and his determination to be someone she’d want to be with. David Brenin’s narration fits the story and gives each character a different feel. Even Thea’s female voice is believable. He nails Aleric’s dry wit and perfectly captures his long-suffering patience in trying to civilize Warin. I love the relationship between Aleric and Warin, especially their easy humor and loyalty.

One of my favorite parts is when Aleric is trying to break through to Warin’s ruthless predatory side, telling him that if he wants Thea to want to stay, he has to stop being so scary. Aleric has these droll lines as he tries to explain to Warin that if he wants to calm Thea down, he might want to start by cleaning off the blood and gore that he acquired while raiding her village.

The book is good and so is David Brenin's narration.
