Can true love be born from scandal?

She is young and beautiful and fashionable, Edinburgh's most flirtatious hostess. But within the merry widow beats a grieving heart. Lady Mairi mourns the husband she lost two years before-and no matter how accomplished a lover Jack Rutherford may be, their wanton night together was an encounter of the body only, and Lady Mairi would prefer to forget it.

But when Mairi is threatened by a blackmailer, Jack is the only man who can protect her. As they work together to uncover where the danger lies, their passion reignites. Little by little, the masks they wear burn away, and their most private secrets come to light....

Highlander's Passion

In Ms Cornick's second book in the "Scottish Brides" series we find ourselves at a Masquerade Ball in the wild Scottish Highlands of 1815. Where fashionable society widow Lady Mairi MacLeod plans one night of passion with a man she meets at the ball, neither having any idea of the true identity of the other. They wear masks, and the assignation takes place in a dark room. Lady Mairi had never known such desire and passion.

The next morning, while he lay sleeping she finally saw his face and was mortified. After recognizing her lover she decides to leave him "seduced and abandoned", preferring to forget the night of wicked passion she had spent in his arms.

Jack cannot forget the mysterious woman, and becomes obsessed with finding her. Thus begins this compelling story; a blend of passion-filled romance and intriguing mystery.

I enjoyed listening to "One Night with the Laird", and Claudia Harris' narration. It's a story that can stand alone, although part of a series. I highly recommend it.

BUT ONE NIGHT JUST WASN'T ENOUGH

I love a Regency Rake book and what a lovely enjoyable surprise this listen was as it transports you to the Streets of 1815 Scotland and starts off with the H/H returning from a Masked Ball passionately kissing en-route to a love nest where they have an intense sexy night of pleasure. Neither one knew who the other one was because of their masks and then the darkness in the room..... but in the morning the Heroine gets a shock when she sees just who's sleeping in her bed.

Mairi is a strong, independent, beautiful Heiress and Jack is a handsome, arrogant, successful and confident ladies man but both are haunted by their pasts - Mairi's been betrayed, hurt and has dark deep secrets and Jack is haunted by guilt from a tragedy that happened long ago and that, unfortunately, means neither one wants to commit. But when someone threatens Mairi it's Jack that rides to her rescue.

This is a lovely historical romance that's never dull as it's got mysteries, scandal, suspense, murder, secrets, blackmail, lots of sexual tension, desire and great sex scenes as we watch two likeable but broken lovers gradually open up to each other as their characters slowly develop and they finally learn to trust one-another.

Worth a credit? Apart from it ending a bit suddenly (I would even of settled for an Epilogue), YES this would be a nice addition to your Library.

A Night to be Remembered! Great romance!

"One Night with the Laird," followed book 1, "the Lady and the Laird," and let me say, I was excited to get back into the social world of highlanders in the 1800's that Nicola Cornick created.

The romance between Lady Mairi MacLeod and Jack Rutherford starts off with a night of anonymous passion that proves to be searing in their ties to one another. Lady Mairi takes a chance and lures a gorgeous man from a masquerade ball to a small private home she owns to escape her present worries and lose herself in a night of passion with a stranger. Little did she know, that the man she ravages (or vise versa) is none other than Jack Rutherford, a relative of her sister's husband whom she loathes! Well, maybe "loathe" is too strong of a word. ---The man who she finds to be dangerously attractive and arrogant who she avoids at all costs. YEOW!

In book 1, Jack propositions Mairi to be his mistress and she sent him to hell as any decent widow would….LOL. However, the chemistry and draw that each of these two have with one another is inescapable. Jack, himself, is a total babe. He is charming, handsome, and a favorite among ladies, men and society, alike. The ladies love him for his sex appeal and men admire him for his fierce fighting abilities and business savvy.Yet, Mairi can't get away from him fast enough. After that night of destiny, she leaves him without a goodbye or proper identity, and the man goes wild trying to find her as he just can't get her out of his mind. So, when both characters meet in that moment of revelation, sparks fly and what can I say, their fate is sealed….pretty much!

This story is a great read because of the unfolding sexual appeal that blossoms into an unwavering love that melts alway the strong defense mechanisms that both characters erect. In this book, you will find adventure, steamy love (with some BDSM scenes that are like WHOA!!!--hot in here!), family interactions, deep family secrets, castles, society events, evil villains, but most of all a love that is healing and irrevocable. The end "danger" scene was so riveting and heart warming. Wow! What a man Jack is! I love how he rescued Mairi.

I gave this book 4 Stars instead of 5 for some missed opportunities…

#1-- When Jack & Mairi were already lovers and "betrothed," he asked her to ride off with him on his horse and even though she wanted to, Mairi held back and didn't.

#2--Also, in the green room (I think that's what it's called), Jack and Mairi take shelter from the storm and this could have been a perfect rendezvous, but instead it was awkward and stilted.

#3, NO EPILOGUE!!! Are you freaked kidding me???? I hate it when authors don't add epilogues to great love stories…it's so unfair!

As a reader, I thought those were missed opportunities, but it was evident that the author used these two experiences to showcase the fear that both Jack and Mairi still had to conquer before their inevitable HEA.

Overall, great book that I will re-visit from time to time. BTW, loved the book cover. Some book covers are so off and this one was very, very nice!

P.S. the narrator was great! I thought she did a wonderful job and complemented the story.

Sequel to The Lady and the Laird

Outstanding...just as was the first book, BUT the narrator was A LOT better in this second book. I sure hope the saga continues with a third in the series.

Good story, just not a griper!

I really did enjoy the passionate love scenes especially the opening one. Believe it or not there was also a rope scene and even accompanied by a whip for those interested in that style of passion. The story was just a bit bland and flat in parts as well as a bit predictable since I could guess who the villain was fairly soon after his introduction. Not a bad book to read, again I even enjoyed parts of it fully. Just not a great one.

The ending left out a lot

The narrator was a little abrupt, fast and tense. But all in all not bad.
The story was fine until the end. I would have given it 4 stars if not for the abrupt ending that gave us no indication of things that were hinted at in the last part.
I would recommend this story though. The plot was good and I liked the characters.
Spoiler: the author made you believe that the heroine was pregnant. Then the story ended with no clue as to her condition. Why out those hints in the story if you're not going to resolve at the end.
