Publisher's summary

On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she's vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That's why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

Xavier del Torro, the right-hand man of the Nightkind King, is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can't ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier's world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers - both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past.

Can't stand this woman!

Oh, Thea Harrison, what on earth were you thinking? I own every book and novella and short story in this series, and every time you release a new novel I start from the beginning and read them again. Fantastic series. But think of the wonderful strong women characters you've created: Pia, Carling, Niniane, and Grace? A now you give us this total spoiled ninny called Tess. I can't stand this woman! I'm eight hours into this book, I know the big event is coming to be followed by the happy ever after, but I'm not sure I can make it. Why oh why would an ancient, rich, ripped, sexy vampire want this selfish twit? Argh!!!

Okay seriously, if you are a fan of this series you'll absolutely want to get this book and you'll most likely enjoy it. I'm much intrigued by the story and the other characters as is usual but I have to skip over Tess's dialog. Much harder to do in audio than in print but it can be done. Looking forward to your next book Thea. I'm thinking you'll have this out of your system in time for the next story.

Probably my least favorite book yet.

This book is a bit of a disappointment, I have high expectations from Thea Harrison. The book wasn't bad but if this had been the first one of the series I would have had my doubts about reading any more. Overall I would rate it 3.5 stars due to the fact I love the other books. Four hours into the story and it's going on and on about training and the heroines fear of vampires, no real plot. It was a little overkill and I wanted more romance and adventure like the other books. The characters are boring and Tess is a weak character who considers all vampires as monsters for way too long into the book. Tess was afraid of Xavier for most of the book and suddenly she is practically jumping him. I didn't feel the slow build up that was intended because Xavier was gone most of the time Tess was at his house. It wasn't until about six hours into the story that the book picked up some with the confrontation with the Djinn but that too was anticlimactic. This book missed the mark for me, fortunately I'm a huge fan of the series so I will be reading more from this author. Still the writing was good, only the story needs more substance. Probably the last two hours were the best part of the whole book. The Vampyre stories are my least favorite in the series, for me the Wyr stories are the best. Same narrator as the rest of the series, she does a good job.

Weakest of the series

It started off well enough before stalling out. Neither one of these characters was strong enough to carry a book. Pia and Dragos would have been bored to tears.

True story with a plot! Not just soft porn.

First of all I love Thea Harrison. I enjoy her books because they are true paranormal romances and not just a lame excuse to write soft porn. This book does not disappoint. I love the characters. It is a fresh take on the elder races. It brings to the forefront characters that were just in the background. I felt this book also delve more into the overall functioning of the imaginary world she has created. She really took time to develop the lead characters so that their romance made sense. There was much more story in this book than sex. For those that love them, don't worry there are plenty of steamy scenes. I love the entire series of these books, and this one adds beautifully to the crazy world of the elder races. Give it a try. The narrator as always is excellent. I love her voices. She brings the characters to life and is never corny!

Another great book in an awesome series.

Any additional comments?

The story line really has very little to do with the Wyr or other parts of the Elder Races. The focus is the vampyres specifically on Xavier and who he is and what his role is working for the Nightkind King.

When Tess first meets Xavier she thinks of him as a monster. Tess spends weeks training and learning about the Elder Races. Tess slowly begins to see that Xavier is not a monster and just when things are heating up between them Xavier is betrayed. The romance between Tess and Xavier is not as hot and fast as some of the other books in this series but it works great. I really enjoyed Night's Honor and I am looking forward to the next book from Thea Harrison!

Still love the Elder Races...BUT....

Okay, I miss Dragos and the Griffins, that has got to be why I didn't fall in love with this book. This one doesn't even touch on NY or Dragos for more than 30 seconds just to say the main character went to the games in NY and it was fun..poof that was it, just a brief second to connect with the fan favorites of the Weir domain.

This story takes place in the Night kind Domain, the Vampire Domain, and it was a decent story, just not all enrapturing like the Weir Domain stories. In this story we hear from the Gin and the vampires mostly, and we got to hear more about Julian, which was good because he seemed really shady in other books due to all his interactions with Carling...anyway....If you like the Elder races you will like the book and revisiting this wonderful world of Mrs. Harrison, but think of it as a short story rather than the next novel in the series so you won't be disappointed.

A good addition to the series. Now where's #8?

Setting: San Francisco & Marin County (?), CA. Present day
Genre: Paranormal romance
I like Sophie Eastlake's narration of this series, and I imagine she would be as good reading any well-written book in this sub-genre.
Tess is a Human on the run from her former employer who is really, really mad at her for ruining his plan to fleece a Senator's son. So, even though she fears "monsters", she auditions to become a Vampyre's attendant. She gets hired by Xavier del Torro and spends the first half of the book being afraid of him. I wanted to slap her. You know, if you can't handle the requirements of a job, don't take it. It's like someone with acrophobia hiring on as a roofer. Anyway, Tess trains in all manner of martial arts and weaponry, and Xavier attempts to get her beyond her fear of giving blood in the Vampyre way - though she will allow it to be drawn medically. Tess' growth and the development of the relationship are satisfying, as is the plot. At the end, there's a set-up for the next novel and I'll be really upset if it isn't forthcoming soon.
Definitely worth the credit to add this to your series.

Least enjoyable Elder Races book

I love the Elder Races world and I appreciate the romance and storytelling and world-building Harrison does so well, and this particular book was a letdown. The story arc is kind of weird and choppy, and most significantly, the main female character is hard to like and not believable. All Harrison’s female leads are sassy and strong and mouthy, which I like, but Tess is just annoying. She is rude and unkind and the romance between her and Xavier doesn’t make any sense. I barely finished this one.

Liked it better the second time

Another great narration by Sophie Eastlake. When I originally read this book, I felt the heroine was a little whiny, which didn't come across quite as much in the audiobook. I love the hero in this book even more this time around. A great addition to Ms. Harrison's Elder Races series.
