Editorial reviews

In the lighthearted modern romance for young adults My Dear Jenny, performed with youthful British reserve by Fiona Hardingham, we follow the travails of a late-20-something wise "old maid" named Jenny, who dissuades a much younger and richer girl, Emily, from marrying a good-for-nothing boy out only for Emily’s money. Realizing the wisdom of her older and poorer friend, Emily thanks Jenny by introducing Emily to London’s high-flying society scene, where she meets an elder and most handsome eligible bachelor.

A classic "fish-out-of-water" period-piece romance similar to the works of Jane Austen but without the literary bulk.

Publisher's summary

Stranded with an inn-full of travelers, Jenny Prydd finds herself embroiled in Emily Pellering's reluctant elopement. When she realizes that Emily's having second thoughts Jenny finds it impossible not to interfere. With the help of her fellow travelers - enigmatic Peter Teverley and his nephew Dominic - Jenny foils a fortune-hunter's plans.

That should be the end of it, but when they reach London matters grow more complex: the fortune-hunting Adrian Ratherscombe still has his eye on Emily. Dominic Teverley has a tendre for Emily, but she only has eyes for Peter. Jenny's growing feelings for the intriguing, infuriating Peter Teverley are simply not to be borne. But she finds it isn't easy to put such dreams aside....

Quite Enjoyable

This is my first read with this author.
Lovely story, and the narrator was very smooth. Would definitely listen again to both.

Unintentionally hilarious

I loved this book. It reminded me of novels by Georgette Heyer, my favorite romance writer. My complaint is with the narrator. She did an excellent job in many respects and I commend her for that. But her bloopers were stunning; one could only laugh. Occasional slips in syntax are to be expected. But the frequent mispronunciations of common words were inexcusable in this day and age when correct pronunciation can be heard online with a simple Google or dictionary search.

Fun Regency Tale

Madeleine Robins is a master storyteller. Her regency tales are fun and colorful. "My Dear Jenny" is especially engaging.

half good half-bad

the first half is different because it's steps out of the mold of pretty girl goes to London and finds true love. although it could have done with some more detail to fill it out into an interesting novel.

the second half is the same old windup: humble girl waits to be recognized for her True Value while assaulted from all sides by harpies. skip that part. she finally gets her true love but the journey was bland and uninspiring.

Annoying characters!

The story had great premise but I found the the perpetual way the heroine was put down by herself and everyone else very annoying. It was a bit too much how everyone used her and took her for granted and she not only accepted it but seemed to want to be badly treated. I think way too much time was spent babying and fawning over Emily and she never got put in her place. Nice narrator, she did a great job!

Don’t recommend

Agree with other reviewer‘s - bad narrator. Typical boring story not worth a credit which thankfully I didn’t use.

Language!

I know this is an older regency novel, but I find myself tripping over the narrator’s mispronounced words and the author’s inclusion of “ain’t” and “don’t” where normally they would not be. It may be authentic, but it’s off putting. And how many times can you insult the heroine’s looks?

Ms Robins writes a great marriage proposal scene!

I am so delighted with this novel, and with this author. This is the second of her novels I've listened to, and each have been equally perfect as Regency era novels..... in fact, although there are many authors out there writing Regency novels, Georgette Heyer and Madeleine Robins write novels that have the true complicated personalities and relationship hopes that are found in real situations .... their novels are not shallow lust-based novels, but true stories, where the characters become real to you, and you aren't sure of how the happy ending will ever be able to come ... but, the happy ending does come, and in both these novels,
These novels have dimension, with more than one situation occuring at a time, the novels have depth, like Jane Austen's works, but with the emotional content more fulfilling than Jane's novels. I was smiling with satisfaction and delight at the end of this novel. Please give this one a try ... I think you'll like it.
