Publisher's summary

Listeners of Sophie Turner's more chaste Constant Love series should be aware that this novel contains decidedly adult content at certain parts of the story.

One night, to decide his entire life's happiness.

Chastened by Charles Bingley following Mr. Bennet's untimely death, Fitzwilliam Darcy determines he will offer marriage to Elizabeth Bennet, but she marries another.

Years later, a widowed Elizabeth is mistress of Longbourn, and has vowed she will never marry again. A house party at Netherfield brings them back together, but Darcy will have to win more than her heart if he is to have any chance at making her mistress of Pemberley.

I Loved Every Minute Of It!

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, Mr. Bennet's death on the morning after the Netherfield ball changed everything. With the estate entailed on Mr. Collins and Mr. Bingley away in London, Elizabeth was forced to accept Mr. Collins' proposal. When Darcy learned of the engagement, he wrote to Elizabeth and made her a marriage offer of his own. But Elizabeth married Collins before Darcy could travel to see her, and he knew his pride had caused him to lose the love of his life.

For two years Mr. Collins made Elizabeth's life a living hell. He managed every aspect of her life, took away everything precious to her, disrespected her, and demeaned her. Their marriage bed was especially traumatic for Elizabeth. When he died Elizabeth could feel nothing but relief and began to manage Longbourn successfully.

When Mr. Darcy learned of Mr. Collins' death, he felt hope for the first time in years. After he reunited with Elizabeth at a ball thrown at Netherfield, Darcy strove to show her how much he'd changed. But Elizabeth vowed to never marry again, to never place herself in another man's power. Could Darcy convince her that marriage to him would be better than an independent life without him?

This book was SO amazing! It's lovingly written by an author who showed an obvious love for the original characters. It's a dialogue driven story, a mature tale with steamy scenes. They were necessary to the story and not salacious. I loved every minute of it.

The story begins a year after Collins' death and Elizabeth's marriage to him is shown in short recollections. Luckily we're not forced to endure that torture with her. Despite that, it's perfectly clear what Elizabeth went through, and her strength and determination will have your heart aching. Darcy was especially wonderful in this variation! If you loved Darcy in the original, this version will spoil you for any other man. He's gentle, patient, respectful, vulnerable, articulate, and very skilled. The characters felt very true to the original.

The narration was well done, and pulled me into the story. I highly recommend this story of second chances, I know it's going to be a frequent reread. It's a wonderful ending for the couple that deserves all the happiness in the world.

Great story but the narrator was terrible.

The reading was horrendous and it was painful to hear but as I listen on my 3 hour round trip commute, I had to stomach it. If you can get a paper copy instead, please do it.

Great book, disappointing narration

I have read this book twice and enjoyed it both times, but this narration left me wanting. The narrator lacks any emotion in the the performance.

Did not recognize the main characters

It was a struggle to finish this story. Cannot imagine Elizabeth Bennett marrying odious Mr. Collins under any circumstances.

Being Darcy mistress? No way. Another example of forcing 21st Century standards on an early 19th century gently breed woman. It simply doesn't work.

The narrator was monotone, exhibiting no emotion whatsoever. There were times that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth sounded exactly the same ... and this while they were flirting with each other!

I cannot recommend this book to my friends.

Narrator

While the story was an interesting twist on Darcy and Elizabeth I was not impressed with the narrator. She should have listened to her own recording before she submitted the work. The editor should have also said the unnatural influx of her voice was enough for another recording to be done. When not reading as a character she was fine so I suggest next time she should listen and then she can get the right cadence and natural voice needed for the characters portrayed.

A P&P FF for grownups

Would you listen to Mistress again? Why?

I've listened to this book many times - I like the narrator and the story.

Any additional comments?

It's an 'adult' version of P&P which was a good change of pace.

okay story, bad narrator

This is a good enough story, but the narrator makes it almost impossible to listen to. I liked howthe story is about Lizzy after a terrible period on her life where she was married to Mr Collins. The romance between Lizzy and Darcy is good. Unfortunately the narrator end almost every statement with a downward inflection and her reading took away much of thr meaning in the story. I will not be buying any other books read by this narrator in the future.

Poor sound editing on Audible

The editing was poor and distracted from the story. Mid-sentence volume and sound changes. The narrator’s voice was also distracting. Some parts of the story dragged on too slowly.

Love this book

This book had to be one of my favorites. I hated what Elizabeth had to go through, but loved watching her fall for Mr. Darcy. I have listened to this audiobook 3 times so far and know I Williston again.
